While Cape Breton's culture is typically depicted as a scenic snapshot of Scottish fiddlers and tartans, the essay in this book go beyond this tourism image. Focusing on pastimes, the arts, community, family and identity, the authors have interpreted the ways that cultural practices act to maintain a cohesive and rich social world on this singular island. The themes in this book offer Cape Bretoners a glance at themselves and provide visitors with unsung sketches of Cape Breton life.

Ten-years-in-the-making, Austin Granger's Elegy from the Edge of a Continent: Photographing Point Reyes is a earnest beacon to an extraordinary place. It is a book about Sir Francis Drake and the Golden Hind, Miwok Indians and eucalyptus trees, sea lions and elk. It is a book about wind and fog, lupine and firs, starfish and granite and daffodils. Combining haunting black and white photographs with wide-ranging prose, that is at turns penetrating, humorous, and poignant, Elegy from the Edge of a Continent is both a heartfelt memoir to a singular land, and a luminous meditation on how we make, and are made by, the world around us. It is, above all, a work of love.

This book is about California. Specifically, this third volume is about Joshua Tree--the dry, sparsely populated landscape known for its strange topography and spiritual pull. Jacqueline Suskin spent winters on a ranch at the far edge of the desert for many years, caring for mustangs and goats, walking the long sand roads in solitude. This book explores the richness of her experience in a place many view as barren, exposing its unique offerings through personal narrative. In this collection, Suskin invites readers into the often unseen magic of the desert, a place where silence and open space bring gifts of potent healing and ancient insight to those who are willing to sit still and listen.

This book is about California. Specifically, this second volume is about Southern California, the heavily populated part of the state, the sprawling metropolis, and the thirsty land that supports so many people. Jacqueline Suskin moved to Los Angeles in 2013 and still calls the city home. This book explores her transition into city life after leaving the majesty of Northern California forests and the fulfillment of communal off-the-grid living. In this collection, we move through the struggle of finding beauty, purpose, and joy in urbanity, and in doing so discover the infinite inspiration that exists in a place as unique as Los Angeles.

Within these covers are stories about a group of risk-takers and adrenaline junkies who lived a life of stimulating and challenging activity. It is a rollicking adventure account of men who chose awilderness avocation and lifestyle in lieu of comfort and leisure for their relaxation. This is also a travelogue about much of the backcountry of this nation. Their journeys into these wilderness areas lasted over twenty years comprising some seventy expeditions into places like the Everglades, Okefenokee Swamp, Appalachian Trail, Pesidential Range, and the desert of Joshua Tree. Learn about these locations and other backwoods areas, primarily in the mountain states of Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. Read about these unusual people and the physical trials they put their aging bodies through as they pursued their passion, searching for refuge from their work, and adventure in their lives to help calm their craving for fun and new experiences. Importantly, they wanted to be explorers and to see what was over the horizon. Their interest level had no valley and no summit. It was limitless. They were not purists in the sense of following the conventional standards of "roughing it" in the wilderness. Instead, they did it their way. They were the real thing and enjoyed living on the edge. Not many people do. There is humor, philosophy, lessons on field-craft, and dubious judgment noted in their journeys. These should appeal to all readers with similar inclinations despite age or gender. I am thankful to have been a member of this group, and wish we could do it again. We would try, if we had the stamina.
