First published in 1922, Hobson's study of the depression and resulting unemployment in the aftermath of the First World War is a far-sighted analysis which looks beyond the consequences of the war itself, at the root economic causes of the crisis. Dealing with issues such as the failure of consumption, trade fluctuations, the balance of spending and saving, and spiralling credit as factors which lay at the root of the depression, Hobson's study is a document of considerable economic, social and historical value, which still has much to teach the modern reader, whether interested layperson or student of economics.

Excerpt from The Problem of the Unemployed, an Enquiry and an Economic Policy It is hoped that this restatement of the position, by its specific application to the concrete problem of the unem ployed and by the central importance assigned to the idea of Under-consumption, may avoid some of the mis understanding to which earlier statements were liable. By its explanation of Unemployment as a natural and necessary result of a mal-distribution of consuming-power, contained in economic rent and superfluous elements of profit, the argument claims a distinct place in the theory of social progress. Excerpt from Studies in History, Economics, and Public Law, Vol. 79 The definitions given to the term unemployment by the various authorities cited vary widely, some using it to cover merely the involuntary idleness of able-bodied workers, others cloaking under it all idleness, whatso ever its cause or nature. The limiting extent to which certain authorities apply the term is indicated in the con sideration of their theories. Throughout this paper, how ever, unless otherwise noted, the term is used in a broad sense; in the writer's opinion the vagrant and other types of unemployables are legitimate elements of theproblem of unemployment, even though the social or industrial cause be one step further removed than in the case of the temporarily unemployed wage earner. Excerpt from International Aspects of Unemployment This book has been written, not as an addition to economic thought (presumptuous and vain hope l), but as a tract for present times. Its conclusions are open to argument; for while they seemed overwhelmingly evident to the author during recent visits to a dozen of the more important countries involved, yet the same ground has been covered by many older and more experienced observers, whose published deductions have not always followed the same lines. Excerpt from A Bibliography of Unemployment and the Unemployed The list here presented to the student, of nearly eight hundred books, reports, pamphlets and articles relating to the problem of Unemploy ment, is, of course, very far, alike in form and in content, from being a proper bibliography of the subject. It is, in fact, no more than a summary guide to the principal publications of the United Kingdom, and to some of those of France, Germany, Italy and the United States, for the most part within the last quarter of a century. The items referred to are not all to be found in any one library, not even in the magnificent collection of the British Museum, the courteous assistance of which institution is gratefully acknowledged. The greater number are in the British Library of Political Science, in connection with the London School of Economics and Political Science, where they are accessible not only to students of that institution, but also to any serious inquirer. The present list, pre pared in the first instance for some members of the Royal Commission on the Poor Laws and on the Relief of Distress from Unemploy ment (1 905 and revised for the use of the Research Department of the National Committee to Promote the Break Up of the Poor Law, is now placed at the disposal of a wider circle.
