Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of John Webster, Vol. 1 of 4 There are scarcely any known materials of which to frame even an outline of the biography of John Webster. We know not where he was born, nor, precisely, when; but there is an entry in the register of the parish church of St. Leonard's, Shoreditch - "Married: John Webster and Isabell Sutton, 25 July, 1590," - which Mr. Collier, an author by no means used to jump to conclusions, identrifies with our poet, adding: "our principal reason for thinking that it may refer to him is, that elsewhere in the register he is sometimes called merchant-tailor, a description he himself assumed." Alice, the daughter of this pair, was baptized at St. Leonard's, 9th May, 1606. Gildon, in his Lives of the Poets, tells us that Webster was clerk of the parish of St. Andrew's, Holborn; and as Gildon's book was published in 1698 - conjecturally, but half a century after Webster's death - he may have proceeded upon valid information in his statement. Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of John Webster, Vol. 4 of 4 The copy of this play in the British Museum, from which the present edition has been prepared, is through out corrected in pencil by some critic, who has applied himself to restore that blank verse which the author manifestly contemplated, but which the printers, whether from ignorance, carelessness, or the desire to economize space, have converted into prose. These emendations have been, for the most part, adopted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Works of John Webster, Vol. 1 He is said, I imagine, to have been a member of the Merchant Tailors' Company because one of his pieces, (to be noticed after wards, ) me Monument of Honour, bears on its title-page By John Webster, Taylor. It was of course desirable that the Court Books of the Merchant Tailors' Company should be examined; and the important in formation, illustrative of personal history, which is afforded by wills, was too obvious not to cause a search to be made in Doc tors' Commons. Although something has been found in both places, which perhaps relates to the poet, or to his family, it is impossible to identify him with any of the individuals of whom notices have been discovered in those registers. Excerpt from The Works of John Webster, Vol. 4 of 4 Both Marston and Webster, it appears from the last title-page, made additions to this play. It is impossible to distinguish the portions which the latter contributed; but he is generally supposed to have written the Induction. What is not found in the first 4to, I have marked by inverted commas: other variations of the two editions, I have given in the notes.
