Excerpt from The Ohio Dental Journal, 1895, Vol. 15 The entire credit of continuous gum work lies in two points: first, in taking it out at the proper temperature maintain an adaptation of the platinum, and the compensation for the effect the shrinkage would have on the palate in hard points upon which there was any shrinkage the adaptation must be altered a little bit. This can be done judiciously and without injury to the plate. Aside from this trouble and the trouble of repairing, that is, with the old furnace and the labor connected with making the fire, continuous gum work is a more certain work than any other that we have. It is certainly the highest type of mechanical den ture. It is more cleanly and it is durable. The tissues retain their health and the ridge retains its form under a platinum denture longer than any other plate. With the furnace Dr. Custer has introduced to this society, repair ing would be a matter of no consideration whatever. If a plate hap pened to fall and something broken off it can be easily restored. From the fact that there is no gas about it, there is no danger of free gas attacking the body. There need be no apprehension of that. I think the introduction of this into the laboratory of the dentist will revolution ize that department. It decreases the trouble arising from accidents if you break a tooth it does not have to go through the big coke furnace when you haven't time for it and don't get paid for it, for you can do it without loss of time. I think it is one of the grandest achievements that has been made in the profession recently, aud I think Dr. Custer deserves a great deal of credit for having solved this problem. Excerpt from The Dental Review, Vol. 1: November, 1886 October, 1887 The more difficult special tissue forms of the eye and ear have been so plainly unfolded by workers in these fields that it is no longer a question as to the forms of the elements found, but the discussion is carried to the domain of the more intimate and special physiological function of individual groups of cells which are recognized by all. The very complex structures of the brain, spinal cord, and the various ganglia of the nervous system have been searched so closely that the discovery of form elements yet undescribed seems almost impossible. And as it is with these, so it is with alarge majority of the form elements of the human body. And yet there are many special fields Opening up for further discovery and waiting for laborers. Excerpt from American Journal of Dental Science, Vol. 29: Baltimore, May, 1895 Not many weeks ago a patient came to me with neuralgia, which had continuously destroyed her rest for nearly three weeks previously. She had all this time been under the care of one of those kind of dentists, had a num ber of fillings inserted, such as they were, and one good tooth extracted from the left side of the mouth, hoping thereby to relieve the pain in the nerves of the face on the right side. How is that for science I found an exposed and badly inflamed pulp in a bicuspid on the right side, each side of which the operator had inserted fillings, care fully avoiding this tooth. Telling the patient it was a dead tooth. I saved the tooth and made it useful, but sacrificed the pulp. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1916, Vol. 30: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science The first point I wish to emphasize by way of discussion is the opening into the root canal. I think most of us probably fail there. It is the most important step because it is the first step. We must give Sufficient room for direct access into each canal. That would apply to the molar teeth more particularly. I think the frequent use of alcohol around and in the field of operation is also indicated, not only because it is a splendid cleansing agent, but for its dehydrating properties. I think, also, that the technic of the broaches ln the canal should be further emphasized, as long as we are emphasizing the chemical cleansing. The use of sulphuric acid and sodium bicarbonate is certainly indicated in the difficult canals more particularly. Personally, I have been using potassium hydroxid in place of the sodium bicarbonate. It has been a rare treat to have heard Dr. Buckley and Dr. 'e-isen discuss this paper. There is hardly anything further that I would care to say other than what has already been said. I thank you. Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1891, Vol. 5: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science The question, how the normal resorption of the milk-teeth takes place, and what is the function of the so-called giant-cells of Vir chow, or myeloplaxes of Robin, is in Close connection with the resorption of the bone-tissue, in which we see likewise giant-cells appear that destroy on one Side, what was newly formed on the other. To come therefore to a Clear idea of what is known about these peculiar cellular forms, it will first of all be necessary to give a short account of their history.
