Excerpt from The Dental Review, Vol. 2: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science Oils and fats, before they reach the dentist, to lubricate a motor, disguise the taste of a drug, or give a keen edge to an instrument on a Whetstone, pass through many processes in rend ering, expression, or distillation. It is not, however, of the pro cesses of their extraction that I purpose speaking to-night, as much as it is of their use and value in dental surgery. Oils are either fixed or volatile, animal, vegetable, or mineral. The min eral oils have a very small place in the practice of dentistry. Oil of Shale and petroleum, vaseline, etc., are all useful in the labora tory, and for heating and lighting, as well as for lubricating and cleansing purposes. It is presumed that no special directionsfare necessary for their particular uses by the dentist. The principal animal oils are seal oil, whale oil, cod liver oil, butter, tallow, ior suet, lard, or lard oil, Dippel's animal oil, spermaceti, from the brain of the whale, and Chinese wax. The heavy vegetable oils are palm, olive, cotton seed, colza, almond, castor, linseed, and cocoanut. Dippel's animal oil may become, through its combina tion with iodine, a very valuable adjunct in dental practice. The drug known as iodol, is composed of Dippel's oil and iodine. This ethereal oil is obtained from the dry distillation of bones and other animal matters, although Dippel prepared it originally from dried blood about 1711. It is sparingly soluble in water, the propor tion of the oil dissolving in water being the same as creosote 1-80. Excerpt from The Dental Review, Vol. 1: November, 1886 October, 1887 Each field in histology seems to be worked over and pondered over anew, as new pathological factors have fastened the atten tion of specialist or general practitioner. This is the case whether the new factor be based upon some new fact discovered, or theory propounded; for each thought that gives promise of developing truth must be tried and tallied with the form elements with which it is associated. Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1908, Vol. 22: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science The principal symptom is the pain, similar to the chronic dento alveolar inflammation, which in fact always coexist in a certain degree. The pain is local and reflex; the root is painful to percussion; the overlying gum tissue is slightly more red than normal, but is not painful to the touch; the root is very loose. A good symptomatic sign is afforded by the flowing of a sero-purulent liquid from the radicular canal and it can not be stopped by any means. The anti septic canal dressing is useless. B-ut such a fact is common also to canal perforations, but then the perforation can be detected, the root is not painful to the touch and a dressing with alum stops the dis charge. Unilocular Cysts - Congenital or not, the unilocular cysts after reaching a certain volume do not excite any pain. They are equally common in both jaws. They usually are not any larger than a man darin, but occasionally they can reach the volume of a child's head. According to its volume and consequently the more or less destruction of' the bony wall, the palpation gives a sense of hardness or fluctuation or the peculiar parchment-like crepitation. In general they are not movable at their nares. The oral mucus is movable upon the tumor and is stasio. If the tumor has a fistula, caused usually by the ex traction of the root in causa, the round form of the cavity and its dimension can be detected with an explorator. The condition of the dental system is important. If the cyst is noncongenital, the teeth in connection with it are decayed and loose. If the cyst is congenital we must look for the trouble which caused it during the evolution of the teeth. We can find malpositions or absence of teeth. The disease is local and generally health is not injured. Some of the symptoms are in relation with the origin and seat of the cyst. Excerpt from The Dental Review, 1892, Vol. 6: Devoted to the Advancement of Dental Science We now have before us a specimen Similar to the previous one, save that there remains attached to the columnar cells a certain portion which we yet persist in calling the nerve. No. 4 is a slide showing the forming enamel and dentine in im mediate contact, and the tissue Of the nerve in contact with the formative cells of the dentine, and showing at the same time the enamel forming cells. Up to the present time we have patiently referred to that tissue occupying a position within the forming dentine as the nerve. We will now make an effort to ascertain if we have a'right to continue to use the term. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
