Excerpt from The Archives of Dentistry, 1884, Vol. 1: A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art This objection to its use, where its surface is exposed only to the secretions of the mouth, is practically of no moment. Ten or twelve years integrity as a stopping, should be satisfactory endorse ment of its value as a filling material, and this is not too much to expect of it in favorable locations. In such it may properly be depended upon as a permanent filling. As a temporary filling, the facility with which it may be removed and replaced at any time, recommends it. To secure the best results, as perfect preparation of the cavity is necessary, as for any other material, and as careful protection against moisture is demanded in the introduction of the filling, which feature in the operation must also be performed with the utmost care. Suitable instruments are as necessary for the proper working of this material, as for gold or any other, and without them, the best results cannot be expected. The method of its introduction into the cavity, not unlike other materials, varies with the peculiarities of the case presented, and a satisfactory result demands the best judgment of the operator. With proper care, a satisfactory result is comparatively easy of attainment, but neglect of proper precaution will as certainly result in failure, as would the indifferent use of any other material. Danger of failure, threatens in proportion to the degree of careless ness, induced by the simplicity of the task to be undertaken, while success attends our efforts in ratio with the degree of anxiety and purpose excited by the difficulties presented. Not unlike other materials, experience will be found no disadvantage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Dental Record, 1893, Vol. 13: A Monthly Journal of Dental Science, Art, and Literature, Devoted to the Interest of the Profession The first real step in the use of electricity is dentistry, with the exception of some plating and dipping processes in the workroom, was the invention, in 187 5, of the electric mallet, since brought to such high perfection by Dr. Bonwill, an American practitioner, who has shown himself to be possessed of very high mechanical ability. The action of this instrument is very simple. An electro magnet is placed in such a position as to act on a mallet of iron, which is kept apart from the coils by a small spiral Spring. When this mallet is acted upon by the passage of the electric current through the helix of the electro-magnet it taps the end Of the plugger, and at the same time breaking the contact of the circuit, it falls back released; and the blow is again repeated in a similar manner. The mallet is controlled by a small plate on the right side of the instrument, which, when pressed forward by the first finger of the Operator, completes the circuit, and thus causes the malleting to commence. A slot on the Opposite side of the vulcanite hand piece enables the manipulator to turn the plugger in any desired direction with the thumb. All other than the white cements have little or no cohesion to the tooth itself, and merely play the part of corks, consequently you must rely upon retaining points, undercuts. Excerpt from The Dental Record, Vol. 2 Of the four typical modes of attachment of teeth, the method of insertion in sockets, or gomphosis, attains in all extant orders of Mammalia possessing true teeth, except in some Cetaceans. This form of attachment also exists in Crocodilia, and with the rostral teeth of Pristis. On this occasion the consideration of the general subject of the attachment of teeth is confined to the limited zoological area of man, an aspect of the question which immediately concerns the dentist, and the correspondent, "Student." Though in this article there may not be stated anything that is not already known, yet, if it amount to only a reiteration of structural and physiological facts, with their bearing on certain of the more common pathological conditions, some useful purpose may be served. The Alveolar-Dental Membrane, or Dental Periosteum, is the membrane which fixes the tooth to the walls of the socket. In structure it consists of four elements - fibrous tissues, cells, blood vessels, and nerves. The Fibrous tissue is more or less dense, tough, and of the white fibrous (connective tissue) variety. Very little yellow elastic tissue is to be found, and, those modified connective elements, fat cells, are not regarded as entering into its structure. The fibrous tissue is thicker at the neck of a tooth than it is at the deeper parts of the socket. It runs obliquely from the bone of the alveolus to the cementum of the tooth; and, in all the longitudinal sections that I have examined, this obliquity is more pronounced in a direction from the bone towards the apex of the root. Therefore, the teeth of the lower jaw may be said to hang in their sockets, but with regard to those of the upper jaw, though the fibres pursue a similar course, the principles of gravitation preclude the use of the same simile.
