Dozen), this feeling of uneasy or positively painful tension has con tinned until the tooth has split with a noise which has always been represented to be like the report of a pistol, immediately upon which all pain or uneasiness has ceased. Soon, however, a knowledge of the presence of the tooth asserts itself, and it is found to be gradu ally more and more distressing to chew upon it, until at last the pain arising from peridental irritation, sometimes mingled with true pulp symptoms (but rarely), will cause a demand for relief. It IS my experience in practice that extensive lesions of this kind are, except under some modifying circumstances, very amenable to treatment, which will be given in place, under the proper head of periodontitis. The opening thus made affords a means Of entrance for the cutting bur, which is next, with its protecting guard, inserted in the opening, and the section made along the lines previously deter mined, by running the engine at high speed and forcing the bit later all in the direction desired. The button-like guard at the point of the bur absolutely prevents injury to the dura, which is pressed or dissected away by it from its attachment in the line of the cut as the instrument progresses.
