Meditative reflection--strengthening thinking and feeling through the will--is one of the main methods of experiencing Anthroposophy. Prokofieff writes: "The best path to this goal is inner work with the Foundation Stone Meditation, because this meditation is the quintessence of the whole of Anthroposophy, given in meditatively inspired form by means of earthly words." Rudolf Steiner described the substance of the "Foundation Stone Meditation" as spoken by him "out of the will of the spiritual world," and as "verses heard from the Cosmic Word." Owing to its spiritual and mantric form, the text of this meditation represents an archetype and is thus a key to the most diverse areas of world and human existence. Depending on "which spiritual portal is opened with this key," explains Prokofieff, "one arrives at one result or another, and one and the same line of the meditation becomes a reply to the most varied questions." (from the preface) Just as an entire plant is contained in seminal form in its seed, the whole of Anthroposophy can be discovered in Rudolf Steiner's central work, The Philosophy of Freedom (Intuitive Thinking as a Spiritual Path), a book that lays the foundation for a modern scientific path to the spiritual world. Given the centrality of the Guardian of the Threshold to modern initiation, one may ask where this theme can be found in The Philosophy of Freedom. Sergei Prokofieff presents his insights to this little-researched question in the first part of this volume. In the second part, he investigates the connection of The Philosophy of Freedom to the content of Rudolf Steiner's research into to what he called "The Fifth Gospel." Prokofieff's thoughtful commentary sheds new light on the connection between Rudolf Steiner's early work and what he developed later in life. Saved by good fortune from the flames that engulfed the first Goetheanum, Rudolf Steiners wooden sculpture of the Christ, "the Representative of Humanity," standing between the adversary forces of Lucifer and Ahriman, remains intact, although unfinished, and on display to this day. Unique in the history of art, the Sculptural Group was deeply connected to Rudolf Steiners inner being. The great Christian initiate even died by its side, having made efforts to work on the sculpture days before he crossed the threshold.
