The inspiring story behind today’s craft beer revolution is the subject of this lively memoir by Frank Appleton, the English-trained brewmaster who is considered by many to be the father of Canada’s craft-brewing movement. Appleton chronicles fifty years in the brewing business, from his early years working for one of the major breweries, to his part in establishing the first cottage brewery in Canada, to a forward look at the craft-beer industry in an ever more competitive market. Disillusioned with the Canadian brewing scene in the early 1970s, when three huge companies controlled 90 percent of the market and marketers and accountants made the decisions on what products to make, not the brewmasters, Appleton decided to “drop out” and brew his own beer while homesteading in the interior of British Columbia. He made a meagre living as a freelance writer, and his article entitled “The Underground Brewmaster” sparked the interest of John Mitchell, co-founder of the Troller Pub in Horseshoe Bay, BC. Their partnership launched the Horseshoe Bay Brewery in June 1982, the first of its kind in the country, serving the iconic Bay Ale brewed from Appleton’s recipe. Covering a range of topics, such as the difficulty of steering beer drinkers away from the “Big Boys” breweries and struggles with the BC Liquor Control Board, as well as brewing plant design and the complexities of the malting process, Brewing Revolution touches upon the foundation of what shaped the craft-beer industry in Canada. Appleton’s passion and innovation opened the gates for the scores of brewpubs and microbreweries that were to follow in both Canada and the US, and his story is of interest to anyone excited by today’s craft-beer revival.

How the future of post-legalization marijuana farming can be sustainable, local, and artisanal. What will the marijuana industry look like as legalization spreads? Will corporations sweep in and create Big Marijuana, flooding the market with mass-produced weed? Or will marijuana agriculture stay true to its roots in family farming, and reflect a sustainable, local, and artisanal ethic? In Craft Weed, Ryan Stoa argues that the future of the marijuana industry should be powered by small farms—that its model should be more craft beer than Anheuser-Busch. To make his case for craft weed, Stoa interviews veteran and novice marijuana growers, politicians, activists, and investors. He provides a history of marijuana farming and its post-hippie resurgence in the United States. He reports on the amazing adaptability of the cannabis plant and its genetic gifts, the legalization movement, regulatory efforts, the tradeoffs of indoor versus outdoor farms, and the environmental impacts of marijuana agriculture. To protect and promote small farmers and their communities, Stoa proposes a Marijuana Appellation system, modeled after the wine industry, which would provide a certified designation of origin to local crops. A sustainable, local, and artisanal farming model is not an inevitable future for the marijuana industry, but Craft Weed makes clear that marijuana legalization has the potential to revitalize rural communities and the American family farm. As the era of marijuana prohibition comes to an end, now is the time to think about what kind of marijuana industry and marijuana agriculture we want. Craft Weed will help us plan for a future that is almost here.

Beyond Buds is a handbook to the future of marijuana. Prohibition’s end has led to a technological revolution that’s generated powerful medicines and products containing almost zero carcinogens and little smoke. Marijuana icon Ed Rosenthal and leading cannabis reporter David Downs guide readers through the best new consumer products, and demonstrate how to make and use the safest, cleanest extracts. Beyond Buds details how award-winning artisans make hash and concentrates, and includes modern techniques utilizing dry ice and CO2. The book is a primer on making kief, water hash, tinctures, topicals, edibles, and other extracts from cannabis leaves, trim, and bud bits, and it goes on to explore and simplify the more exotic and trendy marijuana-infused products, such as butane hash oil (BHO), shatter, wax, and budder. More complex than lighting a joint, these innovative products call for new accessories — special pipes, dabbing tools, and vaporizers — all of which are reviewed and pictured in the book. Beyond Buds expands on Rosenthal’s previous book Ask Ed: Marijuana Gold — Trash to Stash. Completely updated with full-color photographs that are both “how-to” guides and eye candy, this book enables not only the health-conscious toker but also the bottom line–driven cultivator.

Technology is so ubiquitous and such an integral part of our lives and our culture that we take it for granted. Indeed, technological advancement is bringing wonderful enhancements to our lives in the form of productivity, ease, comfort, convenience, and fun. But technology is always changing. So where will we be in ten years? Will technology result in a utopian society, or will the picture be much bleaker and darker? Here is the ugly truth: this rapid, exponential growth of IT will soon bring massive, even cataclysmic, social disruption and upheaval. In many fields of employment, IT is taking humans out of the equation and making us obsolete. Entire job classifications and industries will soon disappear. Will yours be one of them? To make matters worse, many “fall back jobs” that people currently rely on to help them get through the tough times caused by layoffs will soon be gone. Think about this impending future development: What will millions of people do when they cannot find a job of any kind, at any amount of pay? Where will they turn? How will they respond? And what will be the effect on society overall? The vast majority of people are unaware of what will soon happen. According to IT Revolution, we, as a society, are like the passengers on the Titanic, coasting along comfortably and complacently, blissfully ignorant of the disaster that looms before us. We are taking a “head in the sand” approach to the future, believing that disasters will happen to “somebody else” or that “the government will take care of me”. But disaster will soon happen to many of us, maybe even all of us, and the government won’t be able to help us. So we must prepare to be able to respond to the future, and we must start preparing now. This is a book that will trouble you. It will antagonize you. It will scare you. But it will also give you hope. As you read IT Revolution, you will discover • How and why the $15 per-hour minimum wage movement will backfire on those demanding that it be implemented • The serious downside of modern-day white collar life • Why technology is rapidly morphing from our Servant to our Master • That technology is not just affecting the white collar world; many blue collar and service jobs are at risk of disappearing • How “Supervisoritis” is harming quality of life for millions of people in the industrialized world and costing western economies billions of dollars annually • How “higher education” is leaving many graduates woefully unprepared for the “real world” • How a major failure of the education system is leading to the removal of millions of people from the workforce and the rapid takeover of industries by IT • A question company leaders need to answer in order to start moving down the road to progress and financial success • What specific steps you can start taking now to shield yourself and your family form the coming disaster Tough times lie ahead for all of us. But it’s not too late for you to take action. It’s not too late to prepare. But we as individuals, family members, leaders of companies, and society as a whole, must act now. Why not let this riveting, fascinating book serve as a practical roadmap?
