No one is safe until everyone is safe. Singapore's struggle against the coronavirus mirrors those being waged by countries everywhere against a relentless, invisible enemy. In times of crisis, confusion and pandemonium abound. Sensing a need for simple and concise public health education and information that could help people to make sense of a bewildering new abnormal, the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine launched a long-running series of illustrated stories on social media platforms. The COVID-19 Chronicles quickly took off, drawing the attention of the WHO's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network, which arranged for the series to be shared with other countries.This book features every Chronicles story published, and tells the story of the work behind the scenes to bring each episode to life. Offering bite-sized explanations of issues and topics seeded by the pandemic's global march, the Chronicles prods readers to stay safe, while also providing a humorous take on Singaporean life in the time of COVID-19.

The Covid-19 crisis and the designed interventions that the authors have catalogued in this book prove definitively that design does care. The authors documented this as it evolved every day from the 1st January 2020 to 31st May 2020 inclusive. Then they looked at all of this care and caring from the point of view of design and, by the sheer volume of design interventions they have documented, illustrate that design is good in a crisis. What the Covid-19 pandemic illustrated is that for the first time in modern history, capital was totally irrelevant. Money could not save your life. Only design could. Rapidly designed masks, shelters, hospitals, instructional posters, infographics, dashboards, respirators, sanitisers, virtual and local communities emerged to save us. From January 2020, design became king. The Covid-19 global pandemic presented an ontological reality; design is more than margins or profit. In fact, design became extremely valuable when it stopped concentrating on those things and started to care about peoples’ lives. This brief episode in history is still repositioning the status of design and reconfiguring its signifier from consumption to care. The contents of this book cover the outbreak, lockdown, and the beginning of the reopening in the UK. In between, the book functions as a history of pandemic crisis design interventions. As such it is a “research-in-the-moment project” where we have illustrated our thoughts and insights in tables, charts and diagrams. We have accepted all design interventions as valid and given them the same role and status by presenting each of them in a standard format. No curation. No selection. No position. The task of critical analysis must follow – perhaps by us, certainly by others.

A novel coronavirus outbreak was first documented in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China in December 2019, and has since spread globally, resulting in the 2019 - 2020 coronavirus pandemic. This book answers and offer guidance to most of the Trade Finance questions and issues raised during the covid-19 crisis. In response to the many Trade Finance questions relating to the covid-19 crisis, Kim Sindberg started publishing a series of lcviews blog posts under the segment CoronAdvice. Between the blog posts, Kim Sindberg decided to collect them as well as some of the articles published in the LCM Newsletter and include them into this book. Of course, this book also contains previously unpublished material, just as there are 2 guest chapters written by A.T.M. Nesarul Hoque and Vinod Elambilan Padinhere. Although the chapters in this book focus on covid-19 issues, the information apply equally to other situations; whether or not there is an ongoing pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of our everyday lives – from the political to the economic to the social. Using a multimodal discourse analysis approach, this dynamic collection examines various discourses, modes and media in circulation during the early stages of the pandemic, and how these have impacted our daily lives in terms of the various meanings they express. Examples include how national and international news organisations communicate important information about the virus and the crisis, the public’s reactions to such communications, the resultant (counter-)discourses as manifested in social media posts and memes, as well as the impact social distancing policies and mobility restrictions have had on people’s communication and interaction practices. The book offers a synoptic view of how the pandemic was communicated, represented and (re-)contextualised across different spheres, and ultimately hopes to help account for the significant changes we are continuing to witness in our everyday lives as the pandemic unfolds.
