Excerpt from The Coraddi, Vol. 27: Member of the North Carolina Collegiate Press Association In order that the well being of its citizens may be promoted, every well organized community has found that laws are necessary. Te responsibility of putting these laws into effect rests upon each individual. Each student who enters college should feel this responsibility and abide by the laws of the college, notwithstanding the temptations which surround her. Even if the officers of the Student Government Association are chosen for the purpose of helping to uphold the laws, the responsibility of the individual is in no way removed. Whenever and wherever the student goes, she should be careful not to do or say anything that would throw any ill reflections on her college, because the behavior and attitude of a student has much to do with the reputation of the institution which she attends. Therefore every student guided by reason and loyalty should observe all regulations of college life. In addition to obeying college laws, "Service" should be our motto and we should do unto others as we would have them do unto us. While we are in college we should do everything we can to promote the comfort and well being of everyone around us, so that upon leaving, we may feel that we have done our part in trying to be a good citizen, and in helping to make our college a more beautiful place in which to live. Freshmen's Place in College Life The new girls hold a position in the life of the North Carolina College which is of more importance than is generally attributed to it. The Freshmen are here not only in quantity, but in quality. Their place is very insignificant in respect to the position held by the upperclassmen, but this insignificance shall not last long. The abilities of the Freshmen are still dormant. The year will tend to bring them out, to release the executive powers harbored under verdant appearances. These new girls are the sources of amusement for the upperclassmen, they are the topic of jest and laughter, and their inquiries are found to be absurd, but they are only Seniors in the embryonic state. From these dormant personalities three years hence shall come the leaders in all phases of college life. The new girls will realize their destiny here when they will have been incorporated into the college life. As yet, they are still the immigrants at Ellis Island viewing with dimmed eyes the vast possibilities stretched out before them. Will these foreign people be assimilated? What A College Education Should Give College may do many things for us, if we are the right kind of students. But the college will not do everything for us. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) applications remain highly significant in modern analytical science and this volume compiles critical coverage of developments in the recent literature. The topics covered in this volume describe contrasting types of EPR application, including rapid scan EPR, using the EPR toolkit to investigate the structural dynamics of membrane proteins and pulse dipolar EPR spectroscopy for investigating biomolecular binding events. An additional chapter reviewing the PARACAT collaboration from the EU has also been included. Providing a snapshot of the area by a handpicked group of researchers at the cutting-edge of the field, this book is a useful addition to any library supporting this research.

Originally published in 1986, this book uses Florentine death registers to show the changing character of plague from the first outbreak of the Black Death in 1348 to the mid-fifteenth century. Through an innovative study of this evidence, Professor Carmichael develops two related strands of analysis. First, she discusses the extent to which true plague epidemics may have occurred, by considering what other infectious diseases contributed significantly to outbreaks of 'pestilence'. She finds that there were many differences between the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century epidemics. She then shows how the differences in the plague reshaped the attitudes of Italian city-dwellers toward plague in the fifteenth century. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history of the plague, Renaissance Italy and the history of medicine.
