Excerpt from The Conestoga River I shall not make my appeal to semi ment only, but to what the verdict of the past 5000 years has been. I shall show you that some of; the greatest events of all time have occurred on the banks of streams no larger, nor as large as the Conestoga, and that their names have come down to us in song and story, linked with the heroic deeds of the ages. Excerpt from The First Long Turnpike in the United States, Vol. 1 At a very early date, roads began to be laid out from Philadelphia to the westward, and it is certain that, in 1714, there was a road which was said to be the directest and best that led from that city to the Dutch settlements at Conestoga and Susquehanna. This or another early road entered what is now a part of this county near the Gap hills, and proceeded westward, through Strasburg, the Big Spring, and on to Conestoga River, at the usual ford lead ing to the Manor. It, therefore, may be fairly asserted that the first well defined road or combination of roads from Philadelphia to Lancaster county was known, at least in part, as The Great Conestoga Road. "The Conestoga River meanders for sixty miles through the fertile farmlands of Lancaster County, From early Native American inhabitants to the European settlers who made the Conestoga Valley their home, the river has provided sustenance and transportation for generations. ... As the region developed and the population grew, the river paid a heavy price in increased pollution from sewage runoff and industry. Conservation efforts toward the end of the twentieth century through the present day have restored the river's beauty and recreational reputation."--Back cover

Excerpt from The Trail of the Conestoga Miss Mabel Dunham, in her book The Trail of the Conestoga, has given an exceptional picture of the early immigration of these people. They came to this country to find it a wilderness, and almost within a generation, by their unceasing labours, they changed the landscape so that well-built and substantial homes fouhd themselves surrounded by cleared land covered with abundant harvests. It is such literature that makes us realize the background Of our country's story. We know and appreciate too little the initiative, patience and self sacrifice which characterized the struggles of our forefathers in laying not only the material but also the political foundations of our country. If we go back to early days, we shall find that the problems which perplex us are no greater than those they successfully solved. In their example we should find alike strength and inspiration.
