Excerpt from The Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, Vol. 1 Accordingly, from the composition of pieces of the one-sided and unsatisfactory character of those contained in The Legend of Good Women, Chaucer turned to the preparation of his great work, The Canterbury Tales. This gave him the fullest opportunity to display all his powers, and must have constituted the main literary occupation of his later life. Excerpt from The Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer: Edited, From Numerous Manuscripts I. IN the very brief Introduction to vol. I., I have given a sketch Of the general contents of the present work. I here take Occasion, for the reader's information, to describe somewhat more particularly the chief objects which I have had in View. In the first place, my endeavour has been to produce a thoroughly sound text, founded solely on the best mss. And the earliest prints, which shall satisfy at once the requirements Of the student of language and the reader who delights in poetry. In the interest Of both, it is highly desirable that Chaucer's genuine works Should be kept apart from those which were recklessly associated with them in the early editions, and even in modern editions have been but imperfectly suppressed. It was also desirable, or rather absolutely necessary, that the recent advances in our knowledge Of middle-english grammar and phonetics Should be rightly utilised, and that no verbal form should be allowed to appear which would have been unacceptable to a good scribe of the fourteenth century 1. Excerpt from The Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer: Edited From Numerous Manuscripts by Walter W. Skeat This has already been considered, at considerable length, in vol. I. Pp. 20-90. But it is necessary to say a few words on the whole subject, owing to the extremely erroneous Opinions that are so widely prevalent. Excerpt from The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer Our refusal to reduce the spelling of the manuscripts to a dead level of philological correctness - were this attainable - has compelled us to use an unobtrusive dot to indicate when the letter e is to be fully sounded. This is the less to be regretted as Chaucer's usage in this respect is not quite so rigidly uniform as it is sometimes represented, and few readers will be inclined to grumble at this help which we have endeavoured to offer as modestly as possible.
