Your user’s guide to the mathematics standards In the 12 short months since the ELA versions of The Common Core Companions, Grades K-2 and 3-5, burst on the scene, they’ve already assisted tens of thousands of teachers with the day-to-day "what you do." Teachers’ one big criticism: what about mathematics? Luckily NCTM past-president Linda Gojak and mathematics coach Ruth Harbin Miles stepped up to the task. The result? That version of the mathematics standards you wish you had. Page by page, The Common Core Mathematics Companions clearly lay out: The mathematics embedded in each standard for a deeper understanding of the content Examples of what effective teaching and learning look like in the classroom Connected standards within each domain so teachers can better appreciate how they relate Priorities within clusters so teachers know where to focus their time The three components of rigor: conceptual understanding, procedural skills, and applications Vocabulary and suggested materials for each grade-level band with explicit connections to the standards Common student misconceptions around key mathematical ideas with ways to address them Don’t spend another minute poring over the mathematics standards. Gojak and Miles have already done the heavy-lifting for you. Focus instead on how to teach them, using The Common Core Mathematics Companion as your one-stop guide for teaching, planning, assessing, collaborating, and designing powerful mathematics curriculum.

With the click of a mouse, anyone has access to the standards. So aligning our instruction should be a snap. If only it were that simple . . . Jim Burke anticipated the challenges and developed the Common Core Companion series for K-12. In his next smart move, he deferred to the talents of Sharon Taberski to be author of the K-2 volume. What makes Sharon Taberski’s Common Core Companion "that version of the standards you wish you had"? It’s the way Sharon translates each and every standard for reading, writing, speaking and listening, language, and foundational skills into the day-to-day "what you do": lesson ideas, best literacy practices, grouping configurations, adaptations for ELLs, anchor charts, and so much more. It’s all here, page by page: The standards for literature and informational texts put side by side for easier planning More than a dozen teaching ideas for each standard Recommendations on how to cultivate the habits of mind that are critical to meeting the standards, including interpersonal skills, collaboration, and perseverance A glossary of academic language for each standard Teaching suggestions for how to support ELL students Developmental debriefs to signal how you may need to adapt expectations to meet students where they’re at An online bank of graphic organizers, student reproducibles, sample classroom charts, rubrics, and photos Reproducible planning templates for each standard to help you map out lessons, select books, generate key questions, and more With more than 30 years of classroom experience in the primary grades and years of consulting in schools nationwide, Sharon Taberski has a depth of knowledge about what both students and teachers in this country need in order to cultivate the win-win of high expectations and high engagement in K-2. She is a nationally recognized educator, author, and presenter, and a leader in the field of early reading instruction. Her professional books and teaching materials have revolutionized the way primary teachers approach reading and remain classics in the field.

"The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are the first academic standards to be independently adopted by almost every state in the country. The purpose and intent of the Common Core standards for English Language Arts (ELA), as well as Literacy in History/Social Studies and Science education, are the focus of this book. This volume is aimed at educators, administrators, graduate students, university professors, and others who deal with students in grades 3 through 5. Each of the chapters addresses one of the major English Language Arts domains: literature, informational texts, foundational skills, writing, speaking and listening, language, technology, and assessment. They contain invaluable information, insight, and research from literacy leaders in their respective fields. Their objective is twofold: to provide a theoretical background and detailed explanation of each of the CCSS/ELA standards, as well as practical suggestions, classroom vignettes, models, instructional resources, and unit ideas to implement the standards"--

The Common Core in Grades K–3 is the second in a series of comprehensive tools to tap into the vast flow of recently published books for children and teens, offering recommendations of exemplary titles for use in the classroom. Currency meets authority, brought to you by the editors of the highly regarded review sources School Library Journal and The Horn Book Magazine. This guide includes hundreds of selections for grades K–3 published since 2007 recommended by The Horn Book Magazine. The titles are grouped by subject and complemented by School Library Journal’s “Focus On” columns, which spotlight specific topics across the curriculum. Providing context for the guide, and suggestions on how to use these resources within a standards framework, is an introduction by Common Core experts Mary Ann Cappiello and Myra Zarnowski. These educators provide perspective on the key changes brought by the new standards, including suggestions on designing lessons and two sample plans. Following the introduction, you’ll find a wealth of books, by category. (Note that the guide is Dewey-Decimal based, so you may want to dig around, for example, in “Social Sciences” to find some titles that you might first seek in “History” or “Science.”) Each section includes a listing of the top titles with brief, explicit annotations, and key bibliographic data. “Focus On” articles are appended to appropriate categories to support in-depth curricular development. Each of these articles includes a topic overview and list of current and retrospective resources (including some fiction) and multimedia, enabling educators to respond to the Common Core State Standards call to work across formats.
