Hanserd Knollys was one of the most influential Baptists of the seventeenth century. University educated, he provided guidance for Baptists on many key issues that formed their identity. This edition includes: "History of the Christian Church" is an eight volume account of Christian history written by Philip Schaff. In this great work Schaff covers the history of Christianity from the time of the apostles to the Reformation period. "The Creeds of Christendom, with a History and Critical Notes" is a three volume set in which Schaff is classifying and explaining many different statements of belief and articles of faith throughout the Christian history. He deals with the history of the creeds, starting with the Ecumenical creeds, and moving to Greek and Roman creeds, then Old Catholic Union creeds, and finally to the Evangelical creeds and Modern Protestant creeds.

One of the earliest Baptist voices and martyr for his faith, Thomas Helwys was the first permanent Baptist and founder of the first Baptist church in England. He is best known for his seminal work on religious liberty, ""A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity"". Helwys' other extant writings include full length theological treatises, personal letters and the first known ""English Baptist Confession of Faith"". These works demonstrate his theological shift from English Separatism to recognizable Baptist tenets. His body of work clearly espouses religious liberty, priesthood of all believers, soul competency, a reverence for the bible, and the autonomy of the local church.
