Excerpt from The Church Triumphant If the Bible be thus inspired, the Holy Spirit having been the controlling agent in the selection of ideas and the use of material, and the final authority in the choice of words, figures, phrases, and forms used, then a most rigid scrutiny of the (original) text in its symbolism, its construction, and its verbal elements, will surely repay richly for all the labor. Excerpt from The Month of Mary, Conceived Without Sin Every age of the Church is, in a certain sense, more glorious than any of 'the ages which have preceded it. It is true that there have been special ages in which God has magnified the Church more visibly than in others, and has been pleased to illustrate it with peculiar splendor and these Special ages have by no means followed each other in chronological succession. But on the whole, the glory of the Church increases with its age. It be comes more famous by its very vicissitudes. Every trial through which it passes is a fresh illumination of its divine origin and its unearthly character. It grows more honorable by the mere force of time, because of the increased number of dangers which it has surmounted, of hostile predictions which it has belied, and of grand human institutions which it has outlived. Moreover the number of the saints in the Church triumphant multiplies yearly, . And cannot be, according to St. Paul's law of sym pathy, without influence on the Church militant. Thus the past, as it departs, is forever adorning the Church with beautiful monuments and interesting memorials, while the present, as it reinforces the multitudes of heaven, is forever infusing fresh vigor, joy and liberty into the body upon earth. For 2,000 years, Catholicism—the largest religion in the world and in the United States—has shaped global history on a scale unequaled by any other institution. But until now, Catholics interested in their faith have been hard-pressed to find an accessible, affirmative, and exciting history of the Church. Triumph is that history. Inside, you'll discover the spectacular story of the Church from Biblical times and the early days of St. Peter—the first pope—to the twilight years of John Paul II. It is a sweeping drama of Roman legions, great crusades, epic battles, toppled empires, heroic saints, and enduring faith. And, there are stormy controversies: Dark Age skullduggery, the Inquistition, the Renaissance popes, the Reformation, the Church's refusal to accept sexual liberation and contemporary allegations like those made in Hitler's Pope and Papal Sin. A brawling, colorful history full of inspiring pageantry and spirited polemic, Triumph will exhilarate, amuse, and infuriate as it extols the glories of Catholic history and the gripping stories of its greatest men and women.

Excerpt from Christ Triumphant and Christian Ideal Since the beginning of the art of writing man's path has been strewn with many books of a religious nature. They have been uplifting and inspiring and have helped to steer thousands of groping, fainting hearts to a higher life. But there are many momentous questions of theology that have been challenging and staggering the minds of greatest theologians and perplexing the hearts of the whole christian world. The author of this book has found the solution to many of these vital problems, through his knowledge of holy writ; and to those who are fortunate enough to read these pages, the mists of doubt and uncertainty will disappear, like the fog before the mid-day sun. These chapters began as sermons and lectures delivered by Dr. Schilling during his pastorates in Texas and Oklahoma. The first chapter was the subject of a sermon preached in the pulpit of the First Baptist Church, of Humble, Texas. It was an extemporaneous production of a sick and deeply distressed preacher and was attended with blessed and glorious results. The sermon attracted wide attention and appeared in several secular newspapers shortly after it was delivered, and later during the near years, it appeared in a number of religious journals, the last one to run the sermon before it was incorporated in this work, being the "Western Recorder," of Louisville, Ky.
