Excerpt: ...recover the original appearance of this side one must penetrate into the little court between the Congregation House and the chancel, where the two tiers of fourteenth-century windows will be found still remaining. The east end also retains its two windows in the same style one above the other. The tracery is simple and the details somewhat clumsy. Two-light windows serve the lower room, and single lights the upper, two to every one of those below (see Fig. 5). This difference in fenestration marks the different functions of the rooms. The library would have been furnished as usual with desks and settles standing out at right angles from the wall, leaving between them pews or studies for readers, with a window to light each study. Seven1 single lights therefore, evenly spaced in each side wall, originally lit as many reading pews, an arrangement familiar to all students in academic libraries. It is uncertain how the original entrance was contrived, for the old door high up in the south wall, which is now once more exposed to view inside as well as out, cuts through and obliterates one of the seven original windows, the arch of which can be traced in the wall. The moulding round this door, however, shows no difference in date from the windows, and the alteration--if it were an alteration--must have followed directly on the construction. The removal of the University library to its present quarters at the time the church was rebuilt did away with one objection to the destruction of the row of single lights in the north wall, which were effaced as has been described.
