Volume 1 contains the central documents of the functionalist tradition, displaying its foundations and growth. Volume 2 presents the founding manifesto of the Chicago instrumentalism, John Dewey's Studies in Logical Theory (1903), and a selection of the most significant reactions to it; and Volume 3 reprints Psychology, by the acknowledged leader of the Chicago Functionalism movement, James R. Agnell (1904). Introduced by Andrew Backe, the text is accompanied by the key secondary works that followed its publication.

With the passage of Public Law 94-142 in 1975, the learning disability construct gained national legitimacy. Feeding that political achievement, behind the very idea of a learning disability, was the development of a science that blended neurology, psychology, and education. This book tracks the historical creation of the science of learning disabilities, beginning with the clinical research with brain-injured World War I soldiers conducted by German physician Kurt Goldstein. It traces the growth of the two primary research traditions, the psycholinguistic theory of Samuel Kirk and the movement education of Newell Kephart, exploring how specific scientific orientations, theories, and practices led to the birth of the learning disability in the United States.

The history and philosophy of psychology is an account of the past, a record of how and what happened to make psychology what it is today. It has been taught in universities as ‘Systems and Theories of Psychology’, ‘History and Philosophy of Psychology’ etc. but is a mandatory paper for all those studying psychology in any university in the world. History can be looked as a documentation of the past but history is also an autobiography and a biography. The history of psychology is also its autobiography and biography. It is alive with trials and mistakes, discoveries and aha moments and is a story waiting to unfold, waiting to be read. This book is written for those entering the world of psychology. It gives an insight into the evolution and genesis of the current concepts and theories. An attempt has been made to keep it simple and easy to understand. In the 10 chapters an attempt has been to parsimoniously capture the tenets of the various schools of psychology and the contributions of various psychologists who have been instrumental in creating the discipline of psychology. Each idea, each thesis that was formulated led to an anti thesis, a revolution, and a synthesis and that in a nutshell is the story of the evolution of psychology. The book follows this paradigm. If the book can generate interest to read in depth, then the book’s existence is validated and I do hope that the book makes you the reader look for more and I hope it makes you curious and interested in the field of psychology

This book, originally published in French, examines the philosophical debates on functions over the last forty years and proposes new ways of analysis. Pervasive throughout the life sciences, the concept of function has the air of an epistemological scandal: ascribing a function to a biological structure or process amounts to suggesting that it is explained by its effects. This book confronts the debates on function with the use of the notion in a wide range of disciplines, such as biology, psychology, and medicine. It also raises the question of whether this notion, which is as old in the history of technology as it is in the life sciences, has the same meaning in these two domains.
