The Chessmen of Mars is a science fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the fifth of his Barsoom series. Burroughs began writing it in January, 1921, and the finished story was first published in Argosy All-Story Weekly as a six-part serial in the issues for February 18 and 25 and March 4, 11, 18 and 25, 1922. It was later published as a complete novel by A. C. McClurg in November 1922.

In this volume the author describes more than 3000 short stories, novels, and plays with science fiction elements, from earliest times to 1930. He includes imaginary voyages, utopias, Victorian boys' books, dime novels, pulp magazine stories, British scientific romances and mainstream work with science fiction elements. In the fifth Barsoom adventure, Tara, the daughter of John Carter and Dejah Thoris takes center stage. Tara meets Gahan of Gathol, but she's not impressed. When Tara is stranded in an unfamiliar part of Barsoom and captured, Gahan sets out to rescue her. When he saves her, she doesn't recognize him as the prince she'd met earlier, so he introduces himself as a warrior named Turan. He's fallen for her, and is hoping to win her hand.
