Of the ore is ample for its proper estimation. The acid solution is electrolysed hot, and the manganese dioxide which is deposited at the positive pole is con verted by ignition to Mn3o4, which gives results varying only in the fourth decimal place. The solution made strongly acid with nitric acid is contained in a previously weighed platinum dish, and a spiral of platinum wire is brought into contact with the surface of the liquid. The dish and spiral are connected to a Bunsen cell, the dish to the positive pole and the spiral to the negative pole. The dish is placed on a water-bath, and as soon as the current is started heat is applied to the water-bath and the temperature kept as near 60° C. As possible. It is necessary to have the solution very acid to start with, and as during the operation it is turned into ammonia, a few drops of acid must occasionally be added to it.
