Excerpt from A Report on the Natural Phosphates of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Arkansas Tennessee is Well situated for the distribution of fertilizer material to the Southern and Middle Western States. Its phosphate deposits occur in What is known as the Central Basin of Tennessee (elevation, 600 feet) and in the valleys of the western part of the Highland Rim (elevation feet) surrounding this basin. (see fig. The Central Basin extends across the State from north to south, lying between the Cumberland Plateau on the east and the Tennessee River on the West. It covers an area of approximately square miles of gently undulating country. The phosphate deposits have been developed only in the Western part of this area, workable beds lying in parts of Sumner, Davidson, Williamson, Lewis, Maury, Hickman, and Giles Counties. The main streams in the phosphate regions are the Cumberland, Duck, and Tennessee Rivers, but there are numerous creeks and tributaries of the Duck River that are of great importance in the development of the deposits, as sources of water supply for mining and handling the rock. Excerpt from The Reign of Law: A Tale of the Kentucky Hemp Fields Some morning when the roar of March winds is no more heard in the tossing woods, but along still brown boughs a faint, veil-like greenness runs; when every spring, welling out of the soaked earth, trickles through banks of sod unbarred by ice; before a bee is abroad under the calling sky; before the red of apple buds becomes a sign in the low orchards, or the high song of the thrush is pouring forth far away at wet pale-green sunsets, the sower, the earliest sower of the hemp, goes forth into the fields. Excerpt from A Year Book of Kentucky Woods and Fields AR through the woods I have been led to-day - the quiet woods touched here and there with pale sun shine. The way has not seemed long, nor cold, but rather a holy way along which I have walked in peace unspeakable. For the trees are my friends, and their presence is a benediction. Beloved are they of the night, the stars, the winds, - and day by day they clothe themselves in new beauty; and upon them ever lies the grace of all sweet memories. Memories of the rain that came with the tender April sky - memories of many a long, bright Summer hour - memories of the Fall, when the light of a misty sun lingered and failed on the hills, and the fallen leaves lay in all the winding ways. Excerpt from The Recovery: A Story of Kentucky As I walked, in an aimless way, down the dusky street the lights from the windows of the houses, set back in the lawns, and the darker shadows of the trees played shutter wise before my eyes, the alternate gleam and blackness confusing me, and acting upon my nerves, in such fash. Excerpt from Kentucky's Pioneer Lithotomists It is only proper that some recognition should be taken of these men and their achievements, and to this end the author has in a feeble way attempted to place before the profession the incidents which occurred in their lives. He feels much indebtedness to Miss Bush, to Prof. L. E. Nollau for excellent photographs, and also to Miss Dalton, the typist who rendered much valuable aid.
