Excerpt from The Case for Liberty In the early months of 1916 I wrote a book entitled The Decline of Liberty in England. It was composed in illness and in a period of acute anxiety about causes and individuals. Like many others I then feared that even if the Central Powers were defeated the British Empire would by victory be converted to Prussian ideals. Yet to-day as I write these words the Central Powers are defeated and the Allies are laying the foundations of international peace. In 1916 it was difficult to write of liberty except in the sentimental manner of John Stuart Mill. War and fear of war have necessarily always been the worst enemies of liberty. Excerpt from The Story of Liberty The necessity of teaching, not only to young Americans but to all prospective Americans, the meaning and mis sion of political liberty has but lately found expression in the movement known as Americanization. What is liberty as exemplified in American institutions? Where and how did it originate? Through what struggles and triumphs has it advanced? What peoples have always been its defenders, and how have its influence and bless ings been finally extended to include all nations of the earth? It is upon a knowledge of the facts implied in such questions as these that young American Citizens, whether native or foreign-born, are to become truly Americanized. Excerpt from Passages From the History of Liberty It is hardly necessary to explain the connection between the Passages, drawn all from one great stream of History, which are contained in this little volume. The efforts of the first Italian Reformers, here, of course, very briefly sketched, are illustrations of the isolation and travail of the Dark Ages. Wycliffe's work was a work of national principles, just beginning, in his time, to be acknowledged by his country of England. Savonarola's reforms express the desires for peace and purification, which were in all true hearts, during a period of so much strife and so many stains, as that period of transition from the Middle Ages to our Modern Times. The Castilian war is one among numerous histories concerning the same desires for juster principles and larger life, as they were in many places forced into struggles, tumultuous and unavailing. Without turning away from abstract truths, that are vigorous and beautiful to all who have open souls, we may be glad to seek the greater power and completer beauty which belong to human examples. We begin with things individual to end with things general, and all our Cathedrals must be built up, column by column, stone by stone. It is after such simplest purposes that these passages are here put together. Although neither many in number, nor full in detail, they may nevertheless be as clear, separately, as a single diminutive volume can be made to comprehend. Excerpt from Murder and Liberty Only stupid weakness would elude with sentimental lamentations the significance of the stupendous fact that. Murder in the most colossal dimensions has been and still is the chief means of historical development. Cold reason must acknowledge this fact, must expose it in all its nakedness, and discover its unavoidable consequences. Excerpt from A Little Daughter of Liberty Three rides are memorable in the early his tory of the Revolution. One is the well-known ride of Paul Revere, who, on.the night of April 18, 177 5, warned the country about Boston of the intended British raid on the morrow. Less Celebrated in verse and story, but equally worthy of commemoration, was the ride of Caesar Rodney, who, on July second of the same year, rode from Dover, Delaware, to Philadelphia to carry Delaware's vote in favour of the Declaration of Independence, covering the distance of eighty miles in thirty hours. Early in November, I 775, a young English serving boy rode from the headquarters of the provincial army at Cambridge to Kennebunk, Maine, in less than thirty-six hours. Untold in verse or story, its record preserved only in family papers, or as a dim tradition of the Maine coast, the ride of Anthony Severn was no less heroic in its action and memorable in its consequences.
