It was found in a ravine about 100 yards wide and equally deep, growing in red clay. Excerpt from The Canadian Field-Naturalist, 1955, Vol. 69 Five of these nine animals wandered over a mile, and were caught as follows. One was found frozen in a hole in a creek bank miles away, where it had probably frozen or drowned. Another was a kit which had been tagged in the nest in July and the following spring was taken in poor condition along a small stony creek three miles from the banding site. A third stepped into a trap along a creek over a mile from the place where tagged. The huge female killed 'by a dog in winter has been mentioned. The other was in a small creek eight miles distant from the place where tagged. Of 28 young tagged in the nest only three were recovered but each of these was a considerable distance from its home nest. A litter of 10 was tagged on June 5. Two of these were trapped the following spring one 175 yd., the other 500' yd. Away. The third was from a litter of 4 tagged July 26. It was taken in spring three miles distant. No'. This day nearly was lost by our mistaking a channel of the River which led us into a, deep bay at the bottom of which was a small river.156 It appears to be frequented by the Esquimaux. This occurred above Mt. Meadow bank. It was blowing a tempest With rain which prevented the steersman from observing the cur rent in this lake-like expansion of the River. The Wolfe and 9 other rapids were run with whole cargoes; they are all strong, some with whirl pools Which must be dangerous in high water. 2 large bands of Musk Oxen were Seen just before encamping, 2 or 3 deer, 3 wolves, many Canada geese and a hawk.7 We encamped late about 3 miles below the Rapid with Whirlpools and Esq. Marks. A cache of 1 bag pem'n and 2 nets was made at a bold point at the bend of the river above Mt. Meadowbank.
