Lee's detailed account of the campaign of 1781 in the Carolinas provides a unique look at one of the pivotal moments in the American Revolution. In addition to recounting the key battles and maneuvers of the campaign, Lee offers a critical assessment of the British commander Banstree Johnson, whose memoirs had been widely viewed as the definitive account of the campaign up to that point. 2006 Scholar's Bookshelf reprint edition. A standard source for the history of the American Revolution in the South during the closing years of the war, this book was originally published in 1824 by the author, the son of ""Lighthorse Harry,"" Lee in response to aspersions cast on his father by early chroniclers of the Revolution. The book contains invaluable material on Lee, his service under Nathanael Greene, and especially the campaigns against Tarleton and the battle at Guilford Court House, where Lee's failure to stay in communication with Greene prevented the Americans from securing a clear victory, leading to some of the adverse criticism against which the author of this work defends his father. Also includes an appendix of letters.
