Lady Irene Wyngate swore she'd never marry, keeping suitors at bay with her caustic tongue. But there was one man she couldn't scare: Gideon, long-lost heir to the Earl of Radbourne. He had been kidnapped as a child and grew up tough on the London streets. And though he had been restored to his family, he was still more at home in gambling dens than stately ballrooms. Irene isn't attracted to Gideon, or so she says when matchmaker Francesca Haughston asks for her help to civilize him for marriage. After all, he is a true rogue with a dubious past. A handsome rogue, she has to admit, but as she reluctantly begins to yield to love, wicked family secrets come to light…with devastating consequences for the reluctant lovers.

A roguish earl with a mysterious past may be the perfect match for a sharp-tongued lady in this New York Times–bestselling author’s Regency romance. Lady Irene Wyngate swore she’d never marry, keeping suitors at bay with her caustic tongue. But there’s one man she can’t scare: Gideon, long-lost heir to the Earl of Radbourne. Kidnapped as a child, Gideon grew up tough on the London streets. And though he’s been restored to his family, he’s still more at home in gambling dens than stately ballrooms. When matchmaker Francesca Haughston asks Irene to help civilize Gideon for marriage, she agrees—but only reluctantly. After all, he is a true rogue with a dubious past. A handsome rogue, she has to admit, but as she begins to yield to love, wicked family secrets come to light . . . with devastating consequences for the reluctant lovers.

This book presents the first collection of the earliest West Germanic bridal-quest narratives together with a comparative study of them. In contrast to earlier studies, the author locates the origin of this narrative tradition in the oral and written Germanic literary tradition, a result that leads to a re-assessment of the genesis of vernacular German and Scandinavian literature. The chapters deal in chronological order with the Latin chronicles of the Germanic peoples and with the early Latin and vernacular literature in Germany and Scandinavia.

König Rother, Salman und Morolf, the Münchner Oswald and Grauer Rock (otherwise known as Orendel) have had a troubled position in the literary history of medieval Germany. Forced into a normative generic framework as either 'Minstrel Epic' (Spielmannsepik) or 'Bridal-quest Epic' (Brautwerbungsepik), these texts have been viewed conventionally according to an essentially teleological classification or a schematic ideal. Bowden challenges the premises of such a view with a detailed history of the textual scholarship, and revaluates these so called 'Bridal quests' on their own terms, offering detailed and suggestive readings of each work without the distortions or limitations inherent in the traditional interpretative model. Sarah Bowden is Powys Roberts Research Fellow at St Hugh's College, Oxford.
