But of their lives beyond the age of twenty-one this book takes no account. The stories are taken from the history of our own land and from that of our near neighbours France and Germany - France our one-time enemy, Germany our constant ally. Other countries too have had child rulers, but I could not tell of all. I have not tried even to tell the stories of all the child rulers of our own land.
