'musical and haunting' Publisher's Weekly Paul is a dreamer, his head alive with rippling pianos, gentle violins and the smiles of Margaret, the one he loves. But in the cold light of day, Margaret snubs him at school, the piano has been sold, his father is battling to keep the farm, and dejected men are tramping the roads...looking for work, a sandwich, a cup of tea... No one has time for music or dreams. Then Eric the Red comes along. Eric the Red, with his silver flute, his knowing wink and boots held together with wire. Eric the Red, just a step ahead of the law. Eric the Red, who knows how to make a flute from a piece of bamboo... The Bamboo Flute is an evocative story of hardship, hope, respect and recognition, set during the Depression. Amongst many acclamations it has won the Children's Book Council of Australia's Book of the Year for Younger Readers.

When a flood kills eleven-year-old Andy Flynn's mother and stepfather, the only world he has ever known is gone and he is alone. Aunt Mona, whom he has never met, takes him to live with her in Halifax, on the opposite side of the country. During the flight, Aunt Mona tells him harshly that his father was not a war hero killed in battle, as Andy's mother led him to believe, but a no-good thief and drunk who is very much alive in Halifax. Andy is stunned, and as soon as they reach their destination, he runs away from his aunt to find his father. James Heneghan's remarkable gift for storytelling shines as strongly as ever in this moving and funny tale.

The extremely important core of music or even of our life is; expansion for freedom. Freedom to play music without chain or any restriction. In order to be free we need to open our mind and body. However it is easy to say but, it is difficult to do. Then how to open up our whole body depends on how steadly and concretely start and keep going forward to reach our goal step by step. That is about this book from my 50 years experience. We start from basic breathing, simple posture and gradually we check each part of the body some are visible (we say outer-muscles), some are difficult to see or touch (inner muscles) including organs like throat, inside mouth, diaphragm, and back-muscles. In order to check our whole body since we have around six hundred muscles (it is plenty), so we need to do gradually herefore, you could open and read this book wherever you feel comfortable (you don't have to start reading from first page; just open the book and enjoy that page. And when you feel start reading from the first page, then that is the time to organize your idea of managing the whole body. But don't force yourself because it is good to maintain the free-attitude for anything. Music Institute of America The Japanese Music Institute of America (JMI) was founded by Masayuki Koga in 1981 to introduce the highest quality of Japanese Classical music for Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) to the U.S. Since then, JMI has fostered the appreciation and study of traditional Japanese music. Each year JMI receives far more requests than it can possibly accommodate for low or non-fee supported performances from a variety of Japanese social, religious and cultural organizations. Generally, these requests fall into the category of: 1) Japanese seasonal celebrations, e.g. summer "obon," spring "cherry blossom"; 2) Buddhist/Shinto shrine anniversaries; 3) lecture/demonstrations, e.g. Stanford University and New York University in Eastcoast; and, 4) public festivals. Yearly audiences for the performances we are able to provide ranges from 2,500 to 6,000. The venues range from Mountain View's Japanese Community Center to the San Francisco Cherry Blossom Festival to Placerville's Buddhist Church east of Sacramento. Occasionally, as resources allow, other noted master musicians from Japan are invited and presented to the public at important locations ranging from Stanford University to the San Francisco Asian Art Museum.Locations of shakuhachi lessons:We have regular classes and rehearsals at Pine United Methodist Church in San Francisco ( 33rd Ave, S.F.) by Msayuki Koga. Also, at East Bay Center for Performing Arts in Richmond (339 11th St.) by Assistant instructor/ Jordan Simmons, in San Francisco by Assist. Instructors/ Alan Johnson and by/ Peter Frentzel as well. This book is designed to offer a comprehensive beginning course in the technique of the north Indian keyless bamboo flute. Profusely illustrated with charts, exercises, photographs of playing positions and decorative material, the manual will enable a person to appropriate authentic raga materials and methods of development, as taught by the late master flutist and flutemaker, Shri Devendra Murdeshwar. Included are detailed explanations of the fundamentals of a number of essential topics in Hindustani music. These include the scalar system; the concept of raga; microtonalism; the system of teaching and learning; cyclical meter, and others. The included audio CD demonstrates all the notated examples and lessons included in the book, and also includes a full performance by Mr. Leifer of Raga Yemen, one of the ragas taught in the book. This manual will prove especially useful to players seeking to broaden their viewpoint and range of expression on the transverse flute ? an instrument which, in various forms, is played all over the world. Other students of Indian music may also find it useful for the compendious nature of the basic information offered on the music?s performance.Lyon Leifer began studying Indian music and bansuri in 1965, after obtaining a degree in flute from the Juilliard School and holding the second flute chair in the St. Louis Symphony. In addition to Devendra Murdeshwar, his flute teachers have included Julius Baker, Walfrid Kujala and Emil Eck. Mr. Leifer resides in the Chicago area where he is an active performer and teacher of both Western and Indian classical music. Appearances have taken him to venues ranging from New York?s Lincoln Center to the hall of the Shanghai Symphony, with appearances in any number of places in-between. His performances of raga music on the bansuri have been particularly welcomed by Indian audiences and press.
