Raising a family presented its own unique set of challenges in Service. The major portion of parenting would invariably fall on the wife, while the dashing soldier, sailor or airman would do just that – dash in and dash out. On the rare occasions when he did lend a hand, there would be the inevitable mix-up of tins of baby food with tins of brasso, diapers inside DMS boots, rattles, ribbons and rank badges and invariably that one essential item of uniform missing! Life in the Services, away from the place of work is a cheerful mix of trunks, government issue furniture, school uniforms, belts, cap badges, tins of shoe polish, webbing and the million other things that occupy a serviceman's house. While the profession of military service is a serious one, with risks to life and limb, it is a different world in the cantonments where they live. This is a book about the lighter side of life in the Services away from work, in the houses that they occupy for short periods before moving to another station on transfer, to take up new assignments, as seen through the eyes of a child, a wife and a serving officer. The book consists of several short stories spanning a period of around 75 years from pre-independence India to the present.

This book offers a compelling account of how America's combat soldiers experienced Europe during World War II. It paints a vivid picture of the GIs' struggles with its natural surroundings, their confrontations with its soldiers, their encounters with its civilians, and their reactions to uncovering the holocaust. The book shows how these harrowing experiences convinced the American soldiers that Europe's collapse was not just the result of the war, but also of the Old World's deep-seated political cynicism, economic stagnation, and cultural decadence.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize “A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue.”—The New York Times Book Review A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times).

Was love the greatest punishment of all? Repulsed by her ugly newborn, Hera throws him into the sea, where he shatters his ankle. As darkness looms, Thetis the sea witch saves the wounded child and raises him in her underwater grotto. Hephaestus is the only Olympian whose injuries never heal, and Zeus adds to his burden by sentencing him to life with Aphrodite. Unhappily married to the adulterous goddess of love, he is fated to repeat his childhood pattern of rejection. To subdue his emotional and physical pain, he harnesses fire to make magical inventions. Of course, the other gods take advantage of his good nature and demand all manner of trinkets. A silver mouse for Apollo. A girdle for Aphrodite. Armour for Athena. A bow and arrow for Eros. Winged sandals for Hermes. A throne for Hera. A golden mastiff for Zeus. But the god of fire is nobody’s fool. His magic has a shadow side, as gods and mortals learn to their cost when Zeus orders him to create Pandora’s jar… God of Fire is recommended for adults who enjoy modern retellings of the classic Greek myths.
