Excerpt from The Attic Orators From Antiphon to Isaeos The first object of this book is to offer a contribution to a chapter in the history of Greek Literature which has perhaps received less attention than its importance deserves. Tho oratorical branch of Attic prose has a more direct and more fruitful relation to the general development than modern analogies would suggest. To trace the course of Athenian oratory from its beginnings as an art to the days of its decline is, necessarily, to sketch the history of Greek prose expression in its most widely influential form, and to show how this form was affected by a series of causes, political or social. The second object of the book is to supply an aid to the particular study of the Attic orators before Demosthenes. The artistic development of Attic oratory is sketched as a whole. But a separate and minute treatment is given only to Antiphon, Andokides, Lysias, Isokrates and Isaeos. The period thus specially determined has more than a correspondence with a practical need: it has an inner unity, resting on grounds which are stated in the Introduction and which are illustrated at each stage of the subsequent inquiry. Excerpt from Selections From the Attic Orators: Antiphon, Andokides, Lysias, Isokrates, Isaeos For the first of these two objects it was essential that each author should be represented by several extracts rather than by a single whole work, in cases where the latter must have excluded too much of the former. Thus, if the speech of Lysias Against Eraiosl/zenes had been given entire, it would have been necessary to omit many speci mens of his work in a different kind, without which his compass of power and his place in the development would have been imperfectly understood. For my purpose, the unity of the piece necessarily yielded to the unity of the series. At the same time, wherever it was practicable, I have given a composition as a whole. Thus, among the works of Lysias, the speeches For [vanni/160s and A gainst Pan/than stand entire; the Olynzpiaeos and the Plea for Me Cansiilntion appear in such integrity as they now possess. So, again, does the essay of Isokrates Against l/zc Sop/lists. Vvith the exception of a few lines, - devoid of interest save for those who resent expurgation, - the best oration of Isaeos, the eighth, is given in full. The present work is intended to be strictly what it is called, a companion volume to the A i/ic Ora/07's, in which all the writings of each orator have been analysed and discussed. Care has been taken to indicate, in an introductory note. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Recent archaeological discoveries, coupled with long-lost but now available epigraphical evidence, and a more expansive view of literary sources, provide new and dramatic evidence of the emergence of rhetoric in ancient Greece. Many of these artifacts, gathered through onsite fieldwork in Greece, are analyzed in this revised and expanded edition of Greek Rhetoric Before Aristotle. This new evidence, along with recent developments in research methods and analysis, reveal clearly that long before Aristotle’s Rhetoric, long before rhetoric was even stabilized into formal systems of study in Classical Athens, nascent, pre-disciplinary “rhetorics” were emerging throughout Greece.
