Themes of nature and the seasons; dualities of day and night, sun and moon, past and present; the perversity of time and Fate dominate. Moods run the gamut from abject despair to exaltation. There is much melancholy, but also much hope. A sad chorus sings throughout, but joy has its solos. A strong spirituality pervades the poems that address, implore, and praise the poet's God. From couplets to villanelles; from random rhyme to free verse, the poet uses rhymed and unrhymed forms and varied meter. The poet clearly loves, and is adept with words, and has an uncanny knack for imaginative metaphors. The poems tend to be personal and empirical, but often exhibit a flare for the metaphysical, reflecting a deep capacity for introspection that is creatively analytical and insightful. From simple to enigmatic, clever to straight forward, the character of the poems suggests the poet's intimate familiarity with the forms and expressive styles of poetry in English all the way back to Chaucer. It is a familiarity through which the poet artfully and effectively finds his own unique poetic voice.

John Betjeman's unforgettable poems on landscape and suburbia, desire and death, faith and doubt, helped to establish him as the beloved voice of a nation. Yet the ten books of poetry he published individually, later assembled in the Collected Poems, were an incomplete representation of his poetic oeuvre. Many poems published in journals or magazines were excluded from Betjeman's books by him or his editors and a substantial number of finished poems were never printed at all, remaining unknown to readers – until now. In this exquisite new edition of Betjeman's verse editor Kevin Gardner promises new treasures for 'Betj's' admirers the world over. Betjeman wrote many of these poems in the late 1920s and early 1930s, when he was still developing his unique poetic voice. They reveal a young poet experimenting with both Modernism and post-Romanticism, yet influenced by Shelley and Pope among others. Some of these poems are profoundly psychological, personal and deeply affecting to read today. Several have the delicate and eccentric touch of much of his early poetry and shed new light on his growth as a young poet, while many others reflect the sustained maturity of his later verse. Almost all are typically amusing and highly witty in the style typical of Betjeman; some verge on the bawdy and even, in one instance, point towards homosexuality. These charming and surprising new discoveries, found in archives as far apart as Austin, Texas, and Christ Church, Oxford, will delight poetry lovers and introduce a whole new generation to Betjeman's unforgettable work.

Known primarily for his dramas, Toller also published several collections of poetry. This edition contains 40 poems from three manuscript archives in Germany and represents Toller's entire unpublished poetic oeuvre. The poems cover Toller's life from 1909 to his imprisonment (1919-1924, from his involvement in the Munich Councils Republic), along with some written after his imprisonment. Earliest poems document an intense love affair from his adolescence which preoccupied him until his participation in the First World War. Another group charts his initial enthusiasm for the war, growing moral doubts, and final rejection. The brutality and degradation of life as a political prisoner in the Weimar Republic is described graphically. This collection provides unique insights into Toller's early life and his development as writer and political figure. Each poem is provided with a prose translation, making the edition accessible to non-specialists. The commentaries place the poems in context, provide explanations of specific biographical references.
