"What men will fight for seems to be worth looking into," H. L. Mencken noted shortly after the close of the First World War. Prior to that war, although many military commanders and theorists had throughout history shown an aptitude for devising maxims concerning esprit de corps, fighting spirit, morale, and the like, military organizations had rarely sought either to understand or to promote combat motivation. For example, an officer who graduated from the Royal Military College (Sandhurst) at the end of the nineteenth century later commented that the art of leadership was utterly neglected (Charlton 1931, p. 48), while General Wavell recalled that during his course at the British Staff College at Camberley (1909-1 0) insufficient stress was laid "on the factor of morale, or how to induce it and maintain it'' (quoted in Connell1964, p. 63). The First World War forced commanders and staffs to take account of psychological factors and to anticipate wideJy varied responses to the combat environment because, unlike most previous wars, it was not fought by relatively small and homogeneous armies of regulars and trained reservists. The mobilization by the belligerents of about 65 million men (many of whom were enrolled under duress), the evidence of fairly widespread psychiatric breakdown, and the postwar disillusion (- xiii xiv PREFACE emplified in books like C. E. Montague's Disenchantment, published in 1922) all tended to dispel assumptions and to provoke questions about mo tivation and morale.

The late Lt. General Harold Moore (USA, Ret.) said it's the “absolute best book on military leadership in peace and war.” This book is for military leaders who want to inspire their teams to achieve their best in combat and peacetime. This wide-ranging anthology brings together noted military minds as they examine the crucial role of leadership in combat, relate the lessons learned, and apply the principles to the stressful world of business. The book covers classic and modern concepts of leadership and uses case studies from Alexander the Great through post-9/11 wars to illustrate the principles of leadership in concrete historical contexts. The most important, most penetrating analysis of military leadership to emerge in a generation, this seminal work features leaders of the armed forces as they learn from the past and present and look toward the future. This edition is fully updated with inclusive language and chapters that speak to leading in a diverse world and organized with summary points for each chapter for a quick overview of essentials.

This book provides an eclectic and meta-analytic study on the factors affecting military leadership and its components, taking into account both current and future security paradigms. The contemporary security environment is characterized by an increase in the number of wars, and more human-induced problems than ever before. The first duty of armies today is generally the establishment of security. Today’s battles are carried out in a vague and flexible warfare environment, which can be transformed rapidly. For this reason, military leaders need to be more versatile, with rapid decision-making capacities. In order to realize their duties, they have to focus more on the quality of their military leadership, which is critical to the establishment of secure and peaceful environments. Today, high-level army commanders have to behave more like diplomats, intellectuals and academics than ever before.
