Excerpt from The Medical Annals, 1883, Vol. 4: A Journal of the Medical Society of the County of Albany This interesting case of chronic glaucoma. In one eye and an attack of acute glaucoma in the other, following an iridectomy which had been performed for the cure of the first affected eye, presents so many important points that should be recognized and realized by the general practitioner, as well as the specialist, that it seems desirable to report the case. It illustrates typically both acute and chronic glaucoma, and' impresses on all the necessity for an early and accurate diagnosis and proper treatment, if useful vision would be saved for the patient. The case also shows how brilliant a result - the perfect restoration of vision, as in this case - will follow a properly performed Operation in acute glaucoma, even when the vision has been reduced to perception of light, and in chronic cases where the vision has gradually failed until we have only percep tion of objects we may confidently expect an improvement, though seldom, if ever, full restoration. Odd grains of uric acid produced in the body each twenty-four hours, the liver destroys I8 grains, the kidneys 22, the muscles 3 or 4, and the remainder, about 6 grains passes out of the body in the urine. If foods are habitually taken which contain a considerable quantity of uric acid, it is stored up in the tissues, the system being unable to destroy it. The result is hardening of the arteries, enlargement and hardening of the liver, premature Old age, the formation of calculi in the kidneys or bladder, neuralgias, nervous exhaustion and probably a greater variety of symptoms and dis orders than those resulting from any other single cause. Excerpt from The Annals of Toil, 1899, Vol. 1 of 4: Being Labour-History Outlines, Roman and British Whatever you may say, I believe that the satisfaction resulting from literary studies is deeper than any other satisfaction. I am quite convinced that by literature we may be a thousand times more useful to mankind than we can be in any official position in which we strain ourselves, and often without succeeding, to effect some small benefits, while we are made the unwilling instruments of very great evils. All these small benefits are transient, but the light that a man of letters can shed must, sooner or later, destroy all the artificial evils of mankind, and enable men to enjoy all the good offered them by Nature. I know well that, in spite of this, there will still remain physical evils and moral disappointments which must be endured by bowing the head under the yoke of necessity. But enduring and fighting against these, the human race is strengthened in moral character. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
