James Harper and his wife, Jannett Lewis, had five children born in Ireland. The family immigrated to America in 1720, settled first at Casco Bay and then moved to Boston because of Indian troubles. Their son, John Harper (1705-1785) was born at Linnwady, Parish of Newton, County Derry, Ieland. He married Abigail Montgomery in 1728 at Hopkinton, Massachusetts. They had eleven children, 1729-1749. Their son, Capt. Alexander Harper (1744-1798) ,was born at Middletown, Connecticut. He migrated to Delaware County, New York in 1770 and founded the town of Harpersfield. He married Elizabeth Bartholmew (1749-1832) in 1771. They had eight children, 1772-1791. The family migrated to Ashtabula County, Ohio, in 1798 and founded Harpersfield Township. He died there that year. Descendants listed lived in Ohio and elsewhere.
