Excerpt from The American Whig Review, 1850, Vol. 11 Such is, however, the judgment of most men upon most subjects from the cradle to the grave. It is necessarily the judg ment of all men, and of all ages of man kind, until they have attained that intel lectual manhood which fits and sets them to review the provisional teachings of their nonage, and to transform into principles what had been hitherto but prejudices. Excerpt from The American Whig Review, Vol. 9: July, 1850 The first page of a new volume - the sixth ofithe present series, gives occasion for afew remarks upon the course which we feel it our duty to pursue, as condue tors of the Whig Review. Our efforts will be directed toward the 're establishment of those party lines which have been ln some degree obscured by sectional agitations. The grand doctrines of beneficent proteo tion to every Species of labor, and to in ternal as well as to external commerce, are beginning to be argued from new points of view, upon grounds more practical, and from a more home-felt necessity of reform. For nearly an entire year, discussion has been paralyzed, and political action sus pended, by the slave controversy. The policy of our political adversaries has not been wholly unsuccessful the policy, name ly, of dividing and weakening our ranks by hurling sectional jealousies amongst us. Excerpt from The American Whig Review: January, 1851 It seems almost trite at the present day to urge truths so plain. But however plain they may be, if we examine the history of our time we will find that they are neither very much recognized nor very carefully acted on. If there be any principle more than all others identified as Whig, if there be any undeniably true, it is the principle which asserts that American industry should be supported by Americans in preference to any other. Yet within a fortnight we have seen a society established in new-york for the protection of British manufactures in this country, the leaders of which are Demo cratic, and who will lead and are leading the very artisans whose interests they have bartered to a foreigner. We have seen for four years among the federal statutes, laws inflicting ad valorem taxes on actual Ame1851. The Session and the Whig Party.
