RJ Matthews was a normal, happy, and healthy twelve-year-old boy--until he wasn't. Like many twelve-year-olds, RJ loved spending time with his family. RJ especially loved Sunday mornings when he, his mom and dad, and little brother all went to church together. After church, they would come home and have a big special breakfast and then venture out for an afternoon of fun surprises. Life in the Matthews household was always a grand adventure. Of course, there were times when he and his younger brother argued, when he didn't do his chores and was grounded, and when he really didn't feel like going to church. But those times were few and far between. RJ was particularly excited about this Sunday because after Sunday school, his church was having their annual picnic, and afterward, he was going hiking with his family and some friends. Unfortunately, the Sunday that began with such promise would end with lost hope. This is RJ's story, a story of pain and loss, of denial and anger--a story of losing his way and then rediscovering it. It is ultimately a story of restoration, redemption, and the goodness of God.

Both haunted and driven to discover a 100 year old secret, storyteller Jill Martin, leads the reader on a journey to one of the loneliest places in North America: Sable Island. Sculpted by wind and waves, this thin slice of grass-covered dunes for centuries has lured hundreds of ships to founder on its treacherous sand bars. Only the foolhardy or nave dared to underestimate the dangers of the Graveyard of the Atlantic. It is to this notorious outpost a hundred miles from mainland Nova Scotia that newly appointed Superintendent of Lifesaving, RJ Bouteillier, brings his young family in 1884. In this harsh, isolated and mysterious environment far from city life, young Beatrice, a woman who challenges the prescribed roles of her sex, crosses the threshold from childhood to adulthood. Entries in the visitors book penned by long dead authors come to life in this engaging treasure hunt of passion and betrayal. Their stories unlock the portal to that distant past and chronicle the everyday lives of the residents of Sable Island. Coaxed ever deeper into the islands labyrinth, the reader discovers that Sable reveals her secrets on her own terms and in her own time.

This volume deals with authors in exile - those writers who were forced to leave their home country after the National Socialists seized power in 1933. Although many of the authors have continued to receive recognition in their particular fields, whether film or adult literature, one group of artists has been overlooked - the authors and illustrators of children's literature. Now for the first time German Children's and Youth Literature in Exile, 1933-1050, has recorded and made accessible a wealth of information on these German-speaking authors and illustrators who emigrated to many different countries and regions of the world. German Children's and Youth Literature in Exile, 1933-1950, contains biographies of 101 authors and illustrators of children and youth literature as well as bibliographies of the books written and illustrated by them that were published in exile between 1933 and 1950. Included are authors who were born before 1918 in Germany or in areas of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire and who lived or worked in Germany or Austria until 1933. Many of them were forced to emigrate because their lives were endangered. Some of them left before the repressive measures of the National Socialists were implemented, in order to maintain their intellectual and artistic freedom. The exile countries they chose were the United States, Great Britain, Switzerland, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, France, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Finland, Poland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Australia, Canada, China and Palestine/Israel. Among the authors listed in this volume are Kurt Held (Die rote Zora und ihre Bande 1941), Irmgard Keun (Nac.
