In the second part, Otis is told the story of White Calf, the elk he met in Idaho, and how White Calf overcame the adversity in his life and became a hero to his forest family. In the third story in this book, Otis tells his dear wife about Bessie, an old, ragged possum he befriended when he was young. Otis saw how his hometownas nosey gossip, Agatha Possum, with her treachery, nearly destroyed Bessieas life, but in the end she redeemed herself in an unselfish and heartwarming way.
