Published in TESOL Quarterly a decade ago, the Academic Word List (AWL) (Coxhead, 2000) has become increasingly influential in the field of TESOL. With more than 82% of the AWL comprised of words of Latin and Greek, much of this important list logically consists of English-Spanish cognates because Spanish originated from Latin. In order to serve Spanish-speaking English language learners (SSELLs) better, their teachers need to know which AWL words are cognates. Using published sources and linguistic analysis of the 570 items in the AWL, the research in this thesis has resulted in a newly reorganized AWL divided into four categories that are more useful for our Spanish-speaking English language learners as well as their instructors, curriculum designers, and materials writers: English-Spanish true cognates, partial cognates, false cognates, and non-cognates.

In Academic Word Lists, Keith Folse explains how various lists like the Academic Word List (AWL) have become popular tools in the ESL classroom for teaching vocabulary. Following a discussion on the importance of teaching vocabulary, Folse explains why word lists are useful in language learning and how they can help address the lexical gap. He also outlines what words are on the AWL, how the word families are selected, and what teachers should know about other word lists. The book also includes 10 suggestions for using academic word lists in the classroom, including how to use vocabulary notebooks.

It is not realistic for language students to aim at learning all the L2 vocabulary. Naturally, the most basic and widely used vocabulary needed for essential communication is a component of the first level courses in any given language acquisition program. But with limited time and resources available, what vocabulary should be taught past lower level courses? Since L2 learners are limited as to the amount of vocabulary they can learn, the question that needs to be answered is what the essential vocabulary items for communication are. For students whose goal is to become language instructors, linguists, translators or interpreters, L2 is at the core of both their academic training and their future professional activity. On the other hand, for future engineers, physicians, IT professionals and science researchers, L2 is merely a tool, a means to an end. An efficient L2 learning program is especially important for this latter group in particular, since the main focus of their academic training is not L2. The criteria of frequency, uniformity of frequency, and range have been used in the design of English word lists to answer the questions raised above. These same criteria were utilized in this study to create a Spanish Academic Word List, a list of word families that appear frequently and uniformly across genres of academic texts, when subjected to a corpus search.

Translanguaging: The Key to Comprehension for Spanish-speaking Students and Their Peers is a teacher’s guide for effective vocabulary and comprehension instruction in the translanguaging classroom. Translanguaging is a new approach that incorporates students’ languages and cultures with the goal of strengthening academic achievement. This book focuses on Spanish-speaking emergent bilingual learners, as they constitute over 70% of the English learners in American schools. Also included are activities designed for students who speak only English or languages other than Spanish. We provide teachers with practical tools for achieving translanguaging goals through a method called Cognate Strategy Instruction (CSI). The goal is to teach upper elementary and secondary students to unlock academic texts and meet Common Core Standards. This approach has been classroom-tested and validated by research in English immersion and bilingual classroom settings. This book includes detailed vignettes and over 30 lessons plans, demonstrating how to purposefully plan and deliver translanguaging instruction. Also provided are student texts, games, and assessments – all of the materials needed for a complete instructional program.

Language proficiency is multidimensional. While conversational skills are essential for social interaction, they are insufficient for most academic purposes. To be successful, teachers and students must acquire a firm and accurate command of subject-area vocabulary. Even though a growing number of Americans speak Spanish at home, the United States has a severe shortage of professionals with fully developed academic skills in Spanish. This poses a special challenge for bilingual classrooms. Educators must be able to identify "la palabra justa" - the right word - in preparing or presenting a lesson, especially when providing content instruction and second-language input at the same time. Recognizing an acute need, the editors of this volume brought together an international team of language teachers, teacher educators, and other bilingual professionals to create an English-Spanish / Espanol-Ingles glossary. "La Palabra Justa" features more than 24,000 entries covering the academic vocabulary needed in K-12 education. Unlike a dictionary, the glossary offers a quick, user-friendly way to find translations of key terms in context. Sections include: Language Arts (Grammar & Composition, Literature, and Languages); Mathematics (Arithmetic & Algebra, Geometry, Probability & Data Analysis, Numbers & Measures); Science (Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Inquiry & Process); Social Studies (Civics & Government, Economics & Finance, Geography, and History); Fine Arts (Performing Arts and Visual Arts); Technology; and School Life (Holidays & Celebrations, School Routines & Activities, Field Trips & Transportation, School Library, Playground & Sports, Student Health, Special Needs, Conduct & Discipline).
