Why do we need good ? or better ? English? Just 26 letters, five vowels and 21 consonants have created perhaps the largest lexicon in the world and made English globally the most widely used language today for interaction in international trade, world sports and global politics, not to forget education. A to Z explores, letter by letter, how the English language can be a powerful tool for writing, communication and creative expression for studies, business, entertainment and enjoyment. With the use of many examples and some amusing anecdotes, it also shows how, when used incorrectly, it can make one thing mean something entirely different! The book informs and reminds readers of the basics of grammar and punctuation, while offering tips on vocabulary for impressive communication. Simultaneously authoritative and friendly, this is the perfect book for students, lovers of language and everyone who wants to explore the nuances of the English language, and succeed at clear, correct and smart communication.

"Be in no doubt: the beer was drunk but the man drank the beer." "We must avoid vulgarities like 'front up'. If someone is 'fronting up' a television show, then he is presenting it." Simon Heffer's incisive and amusingly despairing emails to colleagues at the The Daily Telegraph about grammatical mistakes and stylistic slips have attracted a growing band of ardent fans over recent years. Now, in his new book Strictly English, he makes an impassioned case for an end to the sloppiness that has become such a hallmark of everyday speech and writing, and shows how accuracy and clarity are within the grasp of anyone who is prepared to take the time to master a few simple rules. If you wince when you see "different than" in print, or are offended by people who think that "infer" and "imply" mean the same thing, then this book will provide reassurance that you are not alone. And if you believe that precise and elegant English really does matter, then it will prove required reading.

This volume explores both historical and current issues in English usage guides or style manuals. Guides of this sort have a long history: while Fowler's Modern English Usage (1926) is one of the best known, the first English usage guide was published in the UK in 1770, and the first in the US in 1847. Today, new titles come out nearly every year, while older works are revised and reissued. Remarkably, however, the kind of usage problems that have been addressed over the years are very much the same, and attitudes towards them are slow to change - but they do change. The chapters in this book look at how and why these guides are compiled, and by whom; what sort of advice they contain; how they differ from grammars and dictionaries; how attitudes to usage change; and why institutions such as the BBC need their own style guide. The volume will appeal not only to researchers and students in sociolinguistics, but also to general readers with an interest in questions of usage and prescriptivism, language professionals such as teachers and editors, and language policy makers.
