After six years of a peaceful life in their mountain cabin Dan, sets out to revenge an injustice by killing seven men. Written under one of the many pen-names of talented American author Frederick Schiller Faust, The Seventh Man by Max Brand is a compelling and action packed Western that is nevertheless unique to its genre. At so many points during this captivating tale we find ourselves rooting for the villainous and heroic alike as Brand leads the reader on a rollercoaster of a journey. A truly stunning work with much focus on the relationship between man and beast, this tale of vengeance had us gasping for air, vice-like grip on the book (or, in this case, e-book reader) unyielding and woe betide the bringer of any interruption such as the hollow distractions of food or sleep. We really, really liked The Seventh Man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Seventh Man Max Brand "You sure worked yourself all thin. I hope somebody appreciates it." She chuckled. "Ain't been sick, have you?" "Say, who d!you think's in town? Sheriff Glass!" This information sank in on him while he tugged at a boot at least a size and half too small. "Pete Glass!" he echoed. Then: "Who's he after?" "I dunno. Vic, he don't look like such a bad one." "He's plenty bad enough," Gregg assured her. "Ah-h-h!" His foot ground into place, torturing his toes. An hour before, Deal Sanderson had opened his eyes. He had been comfortably wrapped in his blanket; his head had been resting on a saddle seat. His sleep over, he had discovered that the saddle seat felt hard to his cheek. In changing his position he had awakened. His face toward the east, he had seen a gray streak widening on the horizon-a herald of the dawn. Sanderson found what seemed to be a softer spot on the saddle, snuggled himself in the blanket, and went to sleep again. Of course he had not neglected to take one sweeping glance around the camp while awake, and that one glance had convinced him that the camp was in order. The fire had long since gone out-there was a heap of white ashes to mark the spot where it had been. His big brown horse-Streak-unencumbered by rope or leather, was industriously cropping the dew-laden blades of some bunch-grass within a dozen yards of him; and the mighty desolation of the place was as complete as it had seemed when he had pitched his camp the night before. Sanderson reveled in the luxury of complete idleness. He grinned at the widening streak of dawn as he closed his eyes. There would be no vitriolic-voiced cook to bawl commands at him this morning. And no sour-faced range boss to issue curt orders. In an hour or so-perhaps in two hours-Sanderson would crawl out of his blanket, get his own breakfast, and ride northeastward. He was a free agent now, and would be until he rode in to the Double A to assume his new duties.

Library of America presents a definitive collection of classic Westerns by America's master modern crime writer One of the great storytellers of our time, Elmore Leonard perfected his craft writing Westerns, a genre he loved. These tales--some adapted into such outstanding films as Hombre, Valdez Is Coming, and 3:10 to Yuma--are unexcelled for their wiry tautness, sharp characterizations, and jolts of unexpected humor. For sheer stripped-down narrative tension Leonard never did anything better, and the fresh twists he finds in resolving the genre's classic confrontations reveal a master at work. Whether describing a Civil War veteran coming back to find his homestead stolen (Last Stand at Saber River), a man raised by Apaches treated with contempt by the white settlers who will ultimately depend on him for their survival (Hombre), a local constable, tricked into killing an innocent man, fighting back against the powerful man who duped him (Valdez Is Coming), or two convicts in a desert prison--one African American and the other half-Apache--plotting a near-impossible escape (Forty Lashes Less One), Leonard's westerns are tough, suspenseful, convincing, and beautifully spare in style. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.
