Excerpt from A d104-Book of Organic Chemistry Through the numerous discoveries which were made in this branch of the science, especially in Germany by liebig, wohler, and their pupils, and in France by dumas, laurent, and ger hardt, organic chemistry acquired by degrees a totally different aspect, and the old division into groups of substances which had either the same origin, as in the case of vegetable chemistry or animal chemistry, or had single properties in common, as, for example, the vegetable acids, the vegetable bases, and neutral vegetable bodies, vanished. Its place was taken by a more rational classification, which gradually developed into its present form, and is based on the mutual relationships found to exist between organic compounds. Excerpt from Text-Book of Organic Chemistry This book is offered as an aid to the study of organic chemistry in connection with general and professional col lege courses. The difficulty in the preparation of such a' work is to determine what to exclude. We have endeav ored to give consideration to the more important features of the science, especially in its applications. Polarisa tion of light has been treated in some detail on account of the importance of it in the study of molecular structure. Excerpt from d104-Book of Organic Chemistry for Medical Students It was in the hope that organic chemistry might be brought nearer to physiological chemistry, and that their present wide separa tion might soon disappear, that I undertook this translation. Whether this hope will be realised remains in the hands of the readers of this excellent book by Professor Bunge. Excerpt from Recent Advances in Organic Chemistry The excerpts from previous prefaces printed below will enable the reader to see the main ideas which have been kept in view since the inception of this book in 1908. The demand for a fourth edition within little more than a year after the publication of the third edition seems to show that this method of treating the subject has been acceptable to the chemical public. In writing a book such as this, several difficulties have to be 'avoided. In the first place, it is essential to ensure that the text does not degenerate into a mere series of arid abstracts of authors' papers, for nothing is duller than chemical pemmican. Secondly, since it may reasonably be assumed that some readers are not perfectly acquainted with the earlier history of every field of research described in the volume, it is necessary to provide a foundation upon Which the description of recent work can be based. For example, to restrict an account of the work done upon the terpenes to papers published only within the last three years would be to distort the whole perspective of the subject and render the book unreadable. The title, "Recent Advances," was purposely chosen so as to permit the inclusion of earlier work wherever this was necessary; and the words must not be interpreted as meaning that only the very latest papers in any branch will be described. In the third place, the limitations of space complicate the author's problem. Out of the many fields of interest which the subject contains, he has to make a selection, since otherwise the book would be too unwieldy. How is the process of selection to be carried out? In the present volume an attempt has been made to hold the balance evenly between the theory and the practice of the subject, so as to give as fair a representation of the whole field as possible. Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Organic Chemistry As a teacher of organic chemistry, I have felt the want of a small book on the subject. There is no lack of dictionaries and encyclopaedic works on organic chemistry, but they are too large for use in a college course. The few shorter English text-books are not, so far as my experience goes, well suited for teaching. The following work, which has met with remarkable suc cess in Germany, and which the author, Prof. Pinner, has kindly given me permission to translate, is founded on the system of teaching developed by the distinguished chemist Prof. A. W. Hofmann, of Berlin, and in some cases follows his lectures quite closely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
