… It is with great enthusiasm that Kermes supported this initiative hosting the studies, as though these were part of a conference, ‘ideal’ in that it never took place physically, but very much real in terms of the international plurality of its contributions, presented here thanks to lively exchange of information across frontiers … This publication is the fruit of a perfect and exemplary collaboration between curators, conservators and scientists brought together from all countries… The publication here before us provides a number of answers – let us be brave and use the word ‘definitive’ – to questions which have long been an issue of debate … Comme l’affirme ici même Sheila McTighe, toute vision plus large de la pratique de Poussin doit dorénavant prendre en compte et intégrer ces nouvelles données techniques. (Pierre Rosenberg de l’Académie française, Président-directeur honoraire du Musée du Louvre) This volume of the journal Kermes devoted to the meticulous technical analysis of several works by Nicolas Poussin, reveals the wealth of knowledge acquired through the implementation of new methods of physico-chemical analysis taken together with the detailed investigation of the handling and materials deployed during the process of creating the work of art. A number of different means have been employed in order to investigate in the greatest detail the nature of a particular pigment, its impurities, the effects of the addition of a medium as well as the effects created by mixtures … (Philippe Walter, Directeur du Laboratoire d’archéologie moléculaire et structurale, CNRS-UMR 8820, Université Pierre et Marie Curie) indice/Index: speciale – NICOLAS POUSSIN. A Cultural History of Color in the Renaissance covers the period 1400 to 1650, a time of change, conflict, and transformation. Innovations in color production transformed the material world of the Renaissance, especially in ceramics, cloth, and paint. Collectors across Europe prized colorful objects such as feathers and gemstones as material illustrations of foreign lands. The advances in technology and the increasing global circulation of colors led to new color terms enriching language. Color shapes an individual's experience of the world and also how society gives particular spaces, objects, and moments meaning. The 6 volume set of the Cultural History of Color examines how color has been created, traded, used, and interpreted over the last 5000 years. The themes covered in each volume are color philosophy and science; color technology and trade; power and identity; religion and ritual; body and clothing; language and psychology; literature and the performing arts; art; architecture and interiors; and artefacts. Amy Buono is Assistant Professor at the Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Chapman University , USA. Sven Dupré is Professor of History of Art, Science and Technology at Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Volume 3 in the Cultural History of Color set. General Editors: Carole P. Biggam and Kirsten Wolf

Most of the papers in this volume were presented at the CATS international technical art history conference in June 2019 titled Mobility Creates Masters - Discovering Artists' Grounds 1550-1700, which explored the introduction of, and change to, the colored ground layers in European paintings form the Early Modern period. The title of the conference stemmed from the desire to instigate new research projects within the topic of the influence of artists' mobility on material choices and techniques related to the preparation of paintings. As well as contributions presented at the conference, this volume includes additional papers from recent research exploring the same topic. The volume begins with several studies on the documentation of grounds. The contributions are then arranged according to the country in which the painter was active, from southern Europe moving northwards. The lavishly illustrated contributions in this volume deal with the above questions and shed light on different methods of preparing painting supports, the purpose of preparatory layers, materials used in different countries and influence of shifts in fashion or availability of materials on ground layers. This fifth CATS Proceedings will be of interest to scholars and students, and museum professionals including curators, conservators, art historians and conservation scientists.
