In August/September 2002, a group of 78 physicists from 50 laboratories in 17 countries met in Erice, Italy, to participate in the 40th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The purpose of the School was to focus attention on the theoretical and phenomenological developments in gauge theories, as well as in all the other sectors of subnuclear physics. Experimental highights from the most relevant sources of new data were presented and discussed, including the latest news on theoretical developments in quantizing the gravitational forces.This volume constitutes the proceedings of the School. It is dedicated to the memory of Victor Frederick Weisskopf, a founder — together with John Stewart Bell, Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett and Isidor Isaac Rabi — of the “Ettore Majorana” Centre for Scientific Culture, this School being the first of its 114 Schools now in existence.

In addition, experimental highlights are presented and discussed.

This book contains written versions of the presentations made at the 4th International Workshop on the Identification of Dark Matter (IDM 2002), held in York, UK, in September 2002. The objective of this workshop series is to assess the status of work attempting to identify what constitutes dark matter OCo in particular, to consider the techniques being used, how successful they are, and what new techniques are likely to improve prospects for identifying likely dark matter candidates in the future. At IDM 2002 special emphasis was placed on recent results obtained in searches for baryonic and non-baryonic dark matter. The proceedings include reviews of major topics on dark matter, as well as short contributed talks."

This volume contains many excellent articles presenting the most recent progress in high energy physics and the current interesting problems concerning flavor physics. The reader will see how flavor physics has become a central area of particle physics, with the Standard Model (SM) being subjected to increasingly precise experiments, and why the remaining puzzles in the SM, such as the mechanisms of symmetry breaking and CP violation, as well as fermion mass and mixing generation, all are mysteries hidden in the physics of flavor.
