THE SELECTION OF Tales and Bedtime Stories in this book was written over the last forty years with many of them read to the author’s son, Douglas George Spencer, when a child. At times, the author tape recorded a story to be listened to by Spencer at bedtime. The stories were inspired by an incident or by a city or by a country. The longer stories, such as Willymouse, I-Caw-Caw or Freddy Singalong were read over several nights. Spencer was asked what would happen next to Willymouse, I-Caw-Caw or Freddy Singalong or what would they do. Spencer’s thoughts were often incorporated into the story before the next part was written and read to him. Creating tales or bedtime stories continued long after Spencer no longer needed them.

It was 1972. It was summer - and the living was easy! Arthur Jackson has a good job, no ties and no responsibilities, but it is not enough - he wants adventure and he wants to see the world!Based on the author's real life experiences and illustrated with photographs from the time, Fifty Shades of Tarmac tells the fictional story of how a naive young British truck driver obtains his first job driving a Mack on the continent of Europe. His first trip with all its pitfalls and novel experiences takes him from Rotterdam to Bremerhaven via Moutiers and Salzburg and then back to Rotterdam. It is told with humour, introducing a number of colourful characters, and providing a personal and unusual insight into the life of a truck driver in the 70s at a time when Europe still had frontier posts and custom restrictions. It will be of interest to truck drivers, Mack fans and other transport enthusiasts and those who simply want to learn more about the social history of Europe in the 1970s.

This is a journey through, rather than a book of short stories and tales of the, Mystical Ireland that is my home. A land of celebration and a land of those who are not too saintly or too scholarly. It is an island of Banshees, Witches, Pookas and other strange creatures. There is much humour to be had in the Emerald Isle and some of these stories reflect that humour, be it rural or urban. These are stories of hardworking people and those who prefer to avoid work, whether it be hard or easy. It is also a book that describes an Ireland that is fast disappearing in this modern world, bringing with it its traditions and values. Much of what you read in these stories is still part of life in the Emerald Isle and we folklorists are trying our best to ensure that their memory will remain for generations to come. So come with me in this book to the land, where mists hide more than the eye can see and the mind accept as truth.
