Merk's series solution to the momentum equation for steady two-dimensional or axisymmetrical constant-property laminar boundary layer flow was examined. Solutions were obtained to the differential equations associated with the second term in the series. Calculations using this series were made, and it was found to be unsatisfactory because the second term diverges near the point where the first term becomes imaginary. This phenomenon occurs significantly earlier than the actual separation point in every case studied. A new, formally exact series solution for momentum, heat and mass transfer in steady two- dimensional or axisymmetrical constant-property laminar boundary layers was developed. An approximation was introduced to simplify momentum transfer calculations, and an additional approximation was used for heat and mass transfer. Calculations using this method for momentum transfer with several different external velocity distributions and with both low and high rates of injection at the surface compared well with exact solutions. In every case studied, the present method was significantly more accurate than other approximate methods. Heat and mass transfer calculations compared well with experimental data taken from several investigations. Extensive tables of functions associated with the present method have been compiled.

INTRODUCTION TO CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER A highly practical intro to solving real-world convective heat transfer problems with MATLAB® and MAPLE In Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer, accomplished professor and mechanical engineer Nevzat Onur delivers an insightful exploration of the physical mechanisms of convective heat transfer and an accessible treatment of how to build mathematical models of these physical processes. Providing a new perspective on convective heat transfer, the book is comprised of twelve chapters, all of which contain numerous practical examples. The book emphasizes foundational concepts and is integrated with explanations of computational programs like MATLAB® and MAPLE to offer students a practical outlet for the concepts discussed within. The focus throughout is on practical, physical analysis rather than mathematical detail, which helps students learn to use the provided computational tools quickly and accurately. In addition to a solutions manual for instructors and the aforementioned MAPLE and MATLAB® files, Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer includes: A thorough introduction to the foundations of convective heat transfer, including coordinate systems, and continuum and thermodynamic equilibrium concepts Practical explorations of the fundamental equations of laminar convective heat transfer, including integral formulation and differential formulation Comprehensive discussions of the equations of incompressible external laminar boundary layers, including laminar flow forced convection and the thermal boundary layer concept In-depth examinations of dimensional analysis, including the dimensions of physical quantities, dimensional homogeneity, and dimensionless numbers Ideal for first-year graduates in mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering, Introduction to Convective Heat Transfer is also an indispensable resource for practicing engineers in academia and industry in the mechanical, aerospace, and chemical engineering fields.

The major thrust of this book is to present a technique of analysis that aids the formulation, understanding, and solution of problems of viscous flow. The intent is to avoid providing a "canned" program to solve a problem, offering instead a way to recognize the underlying physical, mathematical, and modeling concepts inherent in the solutions. The reader must first choose a mathematical model and derive governing equations based on realistic assumptions, or become aware of the limitations and assumptions associated with existing models. An appropriate solution technique is then selected. The solution technique may be either analytical or numerical. Computer-aided analysis algorithms supplement the classical analyses. The book begins by deriving the Navier-Stokes equation for a viscous compressible variable property fluid. The second chapter considers exact solutions of the incompressible hydrodynamic boundary layer equations solved with and without mass transfer at the wall. Forced convection, free convection, and the compressible laminar boundary layer are discussed in the remaining chapters. The text unifies the various topics by tracing a logical progression from simple to complex governing differential equations and boundary conditions. Numerical, parametric, and directed analysis problems are included at the end of each chapter.
