Recently there has been a tremendous growth in the chemistry of fluoroorganic compounds, which find wide applicatiori in various fields of technique and are used to solve some basic theoretical problems. The chemical properties of these compounds are rather specific, as well as the methods for their preparation. We realized that no good handbooks on the preparation offluoro organic compounds were available, whereas the methods of pre paration are scattered in numerous scientific papers and patents. Even such a well-known publication as Organic Syntheses contains just a few methods of preparation of fluoroorganic compounds. As a consequence, not only for newcomers but even for specialists, searching for simple and convenient methods for the preparation of the required compounds is tedious. To alleviate the problem, we undertook to prepare this book, which presents detailed preparation methods of more than 300 flu oro organic compounds. Emphasis has been laid on syntheses of polyfluorinated compounds, since they are of major interest with respect to preparation and utility. Preparation of fluoroorganic compounds is based both on the classical methods of organic chemistry and on the specific ones, which is due to the difficulty or even impossibility of the direct introduction of fluorine into a definite position of organic mole cule. Most organic compounds of fluorine are prepared by a suc cession of conversions of a relatively small number of starting compounds.

The introduction of carbon-fluorine bonds into organic compounds can profoundly influence their chemical and physical properties when compared to their non-fluorine-containing analogues, leading to a range of man-made materials with highly desirable properties. The book summarizes and gives a critical analysis of the literature on the use of reactive covalent fluorides (organic and inorganic) for the synthesis of fluoroorganic compounds. New methods of using SF4 for the fluorination of complex polyfunctional organic compounds are described. The prospects are shown for the selective fluorinations of complex compounds with non-traditional fluorinating agents (halogen fluorides, XeF2, fluorosulphuranes, N-F- and O-F-containing compounds). The book gives recommendations for the practical use of these fluorides, and typical synthetic procedures. It introduces the beginner to modern methods of fluorination and helps qualified scientists and technologists to choose the optimal methods of synthesis. Using the fluorinating agents described in this book, it is possible to synthesize various fluorine-containing substances.

The present book is essentially based on the lectures on the chemistry of organic compounds of fluorine that I gave in 1969 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia, as a graduate course. References to material published to the end of 1969 are included. The book is primarily meant to provide the background for such a course, and, at the same time, to be a brief survey of recent knowledge in, and an introduction to deeper study of, this area of chemistry, which has been treated in a number of com prehensive monographs.
