La chimie du titane et plus particulièrement celle du dioxyde de titane (TiO2) fait l'objet d'une grande activité de recherche tant sur le plan fondamental qu'appliqué. Les principales applications concernent, en effet, des thématiques associées aux problèmes de protection de l'environnement qui ont pour objectifs la purification de l'air et la dépollution de l'eau à travers la photocatalyse. Dans de telles applications, les performances de TiO2 pourraient ètre optimisées par un contrôle spécifique, à l'échelle micro ou mésostructurale, de la morphologie du matériau. Au cours de ce travail nous montrons qu'à partir de précurseurs tels que TiOCl2 ou [Ti8O12(H2O)24]Cl8-7H2O-HCl, solubles dans des solvants polaires, le contrôle de la polycondensation aux différentes étapes de la synthèse permet d'obtenir des gels ou des solides dont la dimensionalité des réseaux Ti-O est bien déterminée: îlots 0D, fils 1D, lamellaires 2D ou réseaux 3D. Les matériaux cristallisés ou polymériques sont caractérisés par diffraction X, spectroscopie d'absorption X (XAS), microscopie électronique à transmission (MET) et spectroscopie IR et Raman.

Over the past few decades, titanium dioxide has been an important material for different sectors of modern technology. More precisely, this ceramic has been synthesised in the form of nanomaterial and applied in buildings, dye-sensitised solar cells, hydrogen production, sensors, rechargeable batteries, electrocatalysis, self-cleaning, environmental pollution, and antibacterial actions based on its enhanced optical properties. This book describes preparation, photocatalytic properties, and applications of nanostructured titanium dioxide with a particular focus on non-traditional syntheses and brookite. Titanium oxide nanoparticles are produced by hydrothermal processes, ionic liquid-assisted reactions, biological approaches, ball-milling techniques, etc. Physical properties and potential future applications of the produced nanostructured titanium dioxide nanoparticles are reviewed.
