This edited volume offers a comprehensive reference point to an interdisciplinary and trans-boundary analysis of the sustainability of Asian tertiary education systems. The four sections of the volume –Collaborations, Transformations, Global-Local Tensions, and Future Developments—reflect the current conditions, ongoing changes, and new directions of the universities’ transformative contribution to the 2030 UN Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The chapters in this volume draw on inquiries and experiences from 12 research projects conducted in Asia, featuring cases from South Korea, Kazakhstan, Russia, and China, and include regions such as the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, Ural-Siberian, and the Far Eastern regions of Russia. The collection of the studies presented in this volume offers a general framework for sustainable tertiary education that, with some adaptations, could be applied to other tertiary education systems in the world. The present volume, Sustainable Tertiary Education in Asia: Policies, Practices, and Developments, contributes to the research arena of Higher Education Sustainability by fostering a cross-cultural dialog among sustainability stakeholders of tertiary education in Asia and beyond.

This book provides an introduction to the state of sustainability education in Asia. It covers national policies, institutional policies and practices within Asian universities, sustainability considerations for teacher training at schools of education, and pedagogical practices for sustainability in higher education. This volume examines the sustainability of higher education massification throughout the Asia Pacific region. The massification of higher education has swept across the region over the past three decades in complex and astounding ways in some cases. The book inquires after the many faces that higher education massification is taking in varied country settings and seeks to identify the more important implications that follow. It discusses massification and its sustainability within the region’s complex contexts and addresses the issues of implications, challenges, and limitations. Paying particular attention to implications on resources, employment and social mobility, institutional identity, programs, funding and teacher education, the book explores the capacity of countries to stay on the course they have chosen and the implications this may have for the continued identification of resources to do so, the choice to focus more particularly and importantly on the considerable range of innovations and variations and the ability to recognize and develop them in meaningful ways.

This multidisciplinary book focuses on best practices in sustainability research in the Asia-Pacific Region. Environmental education (EE) and education for sustainable development (ESD) are asserting their growing role in curricula around the world, yet how deeply embedded are they in the learning systems of the Pacific nations? Building on an earlier analysis in China and Taiwan, this volume expands its purview to examine the quality and extent of environmental and sustainable development education in a number of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including China itself, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and Indonesia. As well as offering detailed national analyses provided by Asian-Pacific academics and professionals, this work includes examples in the US and Canada and an introduction that assesses the contrasting challenges and positive commonalities among diverse education systems. The chapters reflect leading-edge practice, innovation, and depth of experience and at the same time as detailing locally relevant and culturally appropriate strategies they also provide clear models and strategies for expanding the application and influence of education for sustainable development elsewhere. In doing so, they mirror the global nature of environmental issues as well as the local nature of the solutions.

This book critically considers what various Asian philosophies can contribute to a more substantive discourse on sustainability education and educational philosophy. The contributors examine how ‘east’ and ‘west’ interact in educational philosophy and practice in Asian contexts. As a collection, they provide a broad view of Asian sustainability thinking that is not dominated by Confucianism, Buddhism, Islam, and post-colonialism, but rather which regards these themes—and other frameworks for sustainable education—as dynamic aspects of Asian contexts, both historically and today. As such, the book invites readers to consider the challenges and opportunities for theorising of sustainability in the philosophy of education, while also critically engaging with the way in which ‘Asia’ and ‘east’ are typically understood. Of interest to those researchers in Asian conceptions of sustainability, this book highlights a series of potential insights in relation to the often-foregrounded perspectives of Global North and western-based frameworks. Education in South Asia has a renewed agenda which can enable societies to leapfrog development that is sustainable such that the individual is prepared for his/her involvement, responsibility and commitment to local and global discussions of our common future. This book on South Asia will focus on initiatives under the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) umbrella and discuss the challenges, opportunities, issues and strategies in the countries of the region. It presents these initiatives of Environmental Education/ESD vis-à-vis the administrative, economic, social, cultural and ecological realities of each country at various levels of policy, planning, implementation and evaluation. The discussions in this book extend beyond formal education systems like schools, higher education, pre-service and in-service teacher preparation to community education and education initiatives conceptualized with the goal of sustainability. All initiatives will demonstrate how each country in its own pace contributing to move ESD from the periphery to the core of education initiatives.
