The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2016 provides the first account of where the world stands at the beginning of our journey towards a sustainable future for people and the planet. This inaugural progress report presents an overview of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, based on a proposed global indicator framework, using data currently available. The data and analysis in the report show us where gaps and challenges are, so that steps can be taken to reverse these trends. With collective global action, we can seize the opportunities before us and, together, ensure the 2030 Agenda leaves no one behind. The report is prepared by the Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, based on the data and information provided by UN and other international agencies.

A detailed examination of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the shift in governance strategy they represent. In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Sustainable Development Goals built on and broadened the earlier Millennium Development Goals, but they also signaled a larger shift in governance strategies. The seventeen goals add detailed content to the concept of sustainable development, identify specific targets for each goal, and help frame a broader, more coherent, and transformative 2030 agenda. The Sustainable Development Goals aim to build a universal, integrated framework for action that reflects the economic, social, and planetary complexities of the twenty-first century. This book examines in detail the core characteristics of goal setting, asking when it is an appropriate governance strategy and how it differs from other approaches; analyzes the conditions under which a goal-oriented agenda can enable progress toward desired ends; and considers the practical challenges in implementation. The 2016 Human Development Report focuses on how human development can be ensured for every one, now and in future. It starts with an account of the hopes and challenges of today's world, envisioning where humanity wants to go. Our vision draws from and builds on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that the 193 member states of the United Nations endorsed last year, and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the world has committed to achieve. The Report explores who has been left behind in human development progress and why. It argues that to ensure that human development reaches everyone, a mere mapping of the nature and location of deprivations is not enough. Some aspects of the human development framework and assessment perspectives have to be brought to the fore. The Report also identifies the national policies and key strategies to ensure that will enable every human being achieve at least basic human development and to sustain and protect the gains. And it addresses the structural challenges of global institutions and presents options for reform.
