In 1784 John Wesley revised the Church of England Book of Common Prayer for American. His Sunday Service of the Methodists in North America was a conservative work of one who loved the two-century-old prayer book but say the need to adapt it to the times. The newly organized Methodist Episcopal Church adopted the book as the church's official liturgy at the Christmas Conference in 1784. By its services, the first bishops and clergy of the church were ordained and the first communions were celebrated. Although the book as a whole remained in use only eight years until 1792, it provided the framework for Methodist rites for over two hundred years. The Collection of Psalms and Hymns was Wesley's first collection of songs recommended for public worship.
