Worldwide, skin cancer is the most diagnosed cancer, with one in three cancers being a skin cancer. For outdoor workers, prolonged sun exposure is an important workplace hazard that can cause skin cancer and heat stress, both of which are largely preventable. However, outdoor workers are regularly over-exposed to the sun, often exceeding the recognized exposure limits by many times. They are also often not well protected. As implementing effective sun safety measures is challenging, this Guide, along with its supporting resources, will help workplaces better protect their outdoor workers. This Guide provides a step-by-step process to develop a Sun Safety Program that is designed to complement existing safety practices and be embedded within a workplace's occupational health and safety management system.

This document is a Call to Action to partners in prevention from various sectors across the nation to address skin cancer as a major public health problem. Many partners are essential to this effort, including federal, state, tribal, local, and territorial governments; members of the business, health care, and education sectors; community, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations; and individuals and families. The goal of this document is to increase awareness of skin cancer and to call for actions to reduce its risk.The first section describes the problem of skin cancer and its major risk factors. It also discusses the relationship between exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and health. The second section describes the current evidence on preventing skin cancer, including current initiatives in the United States and in other countries. The third section describes the gaps in research related to skin cancer prevention, highlighting areas of research where more work is needed. The fourth section identifies specific opportunities to prevent skin cancer by reducing UV exposure in the U.S. population and calls for nationwide action.

In the early 20th century, tanned skin was associated with good health. However, people began to protect themselves against potential overexposure to avoid sunburns. Around 1945, the first sunscreen products became available. In the years to follow, a vast number of different sunscreen filters and frameworks regulating filter substances and preparations, and methods characterizing sunscreen products were developed. The perception regarding the tasks of sunscreen products changed several times – initially it was promoted as a lifestyle product, then as a skin cancer preventive means, and more recently also for anti-aging. Different purposes and the widespread use of these products have led to myriad studies and a wealth of information. In this volume, the editors present a current collection of information analyzing and discussing issues related to sunscreen products and their use. These include challenges regarding the ideal sunscreen product including filter selection and formulation issues, measurement methods, performance characterization, safety, and regulatory issues. Further papers address topics related to the use of sunscreen products in everyday life, in vulnerable cohorts and outdoor workers. Controversial topics such as environmental effects of sunscreen products and the risks and benefits of UV radiation in the context of skin cancer, vitamin D and cardiovascular and metabolic health are also covered.

The purpose of this book is to educate your little one on sun safety and most importantly to continue to use these principles in your everyday lives. Melanoma is thought to occur rarely in children. However, a number ... of recent publications and our own experience clearly indicate that a profound change in the natural history of melanoma is now occurring and that melanoma, indeed, is occurring much more frequently in children and teenagers. Teaching children healthy habits at a young age and making it as common as teeth brushing and eating three healthy meals a day is imperative. The best way to prevent melanoma is to minimize exposure of your children's skin to sunlight; the younger they are when they start practicing sun-safe behavior the greater the benefit. A single bad sunburn under the age of 20 may double the risk of melanoma; three blistering sunburns multiplies the risk by five. Minimize exposure from 10 am to 4 pm when the sun is strongest, make sure they wear protective clothing including a wide-brim hat. Sunscreens prevent less serious skin cancers but they won't prevent melanoma if your child stays in the sun for a long time. If you use sunscreen, make sure it is waterproof, has an SPF rating of 30 or more for both UVA and UVB, is applied heavily and is reapplied every 90 minutes or less.
